VOLUNTEER POSITIONS

Positions: Team Builder
Organization: Biosphere Eco-Cities Canada
Location: Remote, anywhere in Canada

Do you have experience coordinating a volunteer team? Would you like to support development of a culture of sustainability? Are you able to work remotely? Can you dedicate 4-5 hours per week of volunteer time?

Biosphere Eco-Cities Canada (BECC) is forming a specialized group of volunteer mentors to coordinate development of various teams. This includes project teams in a Biosphere Eco-City (BEC) and some national teams (e.g., Communications or Fundraising) in the BECC secretariat.

A Biosphere Eco-City is an urban-centred region where people and stakeholders cooperate to promote sustainability. The BEC approach uses simple Themes and Tools to engage people to create a culture of sustainability. There are BEC initiatives in Ottawa, Toronto, Brampton, Edmonton, and Vancouver. BECC supports their development.

While it is possible to find enthusiastic volunteers for BEC project teams in BECs, or BECC secretariat working groups, it is challenging to find people to coordinate these teams. This is often due to lack of experience or confidence among the volunteers. To overcome this, BECC’s Volunteer Teams Developers will each lead a team and train that team to become self-sufficient. It is expected that a cycle of two projects will be needed to achieve this.

The Volunteer Teams Builders will initially coordinate but not do the work of their team members. Rather, they will schedule meetings, identify and organize project tasks, mentor team members, remind them of mission and project objectives, and promote teamwork. Team structure may be quite informal, depending on the judgement of Teams Developers. It is expected that leaders will emerge within each team in the course of its activities.

Teams Builders will report to the BECC Executive Director (ED). The ED and BECC Chair will provide orientation to Teams Developers. Also, Teams Developers will meet online periodically to share progress and ideas.

A volunteer commitment of six months for 4-5 hours per week is requested. For further information or to submit a letter of interest or resume, please contact the BECC Chair at jamesbirtch@BioEcoCity.org   Please indicate you saw this posting at GoodWork.ca.
