GoodWork connects people who want to make a difference with organizations working for a better world.
Since 2001, we've helped people across Canada find meaningful work in environment, conservation, climate action, sustainability, food, community development and related fields.
We work with environmental organizations, charities, nonprofits, community groups, social enterprises, farms, businesses, government agencies and others across Canada.
We believe work can be more than a way to earn a living. It can also be a way to contribute — to healthy communities, a thriving natural world, and a more sustainable and just society.
That's why GoodWork exists.
Our goal is not to become the biggest job site, or to generate the largest possible number of applications. We aim to connect employers with people who are genuinely interested in their work and their mission.
For job seekers, that means a place to discover work that reflects their interests, skills and values.
For employers, it means reaching a focused community of people who actively want to contribute to environmental and social change.
Environmental work has changed enormously since GoodWork began.
Today it includes everything from conservation, ecology and environmental science to climate action, renewable energy, sustainable transportation, green building, communications, policy, education, community organizing, food systems and regenerative agriculture.
It happens in large organizations and tiny ones; in offices, forests, farms, neighbourhoods, laboratories and community centres.
GoodWork reflects that diversity.
We particularly value the work of smaller organizations and community initiatives that may not have large recruiting budgets or sophisticated hiring systems. Good people shouldn't have to work for large organizations to find meaningful employment — and small organizations shouldn't have to compete with the enormous volume and expense of mainstream recruiting platforms to find good people.
GoodWork is Canadian-owned and independently operated.
We're deliberately small. We don't aspire to become another giant employment platform.
Instead, we focus on doing one thing well: helping worthwhile organizations and thoughtful, capable people find each other.
We review postings before they go live, rather than just publishing everything automatically. Our aim is to keep GoodWork relevant, useful and focused on work that contributes to a better world — while leaving it to job seekers to decide which organizations and opportunities are right for them.
We also try to keep posting accessible to organizations of very different sizes and means. Our flexible pricing recognizes that a small grassroots organization, community group or farm may have very different resources from a large institution.
GoodWork grew out of Canada's environmental movement at the beginning of the 2000s.
At the time, people looking for environmental work often had to search through scattered newsletters, email lists, organizational websites and word of mouth. GoodWork was created to bring those opportunities together and make them easier to find.
Over the years, thousands of organizations have used GoodWork to reach people who care about their work, and countless people have come here looking for ways to put their skills and values into action.
The technology has changed considerably since then. The basic idea hasn't.
Bring together people who want to do good work with organizations that need them.
The internet has become increasingly dominated by enormous platforms, algorithms, automation and mass applications.
GoodWork takes a somewhat different approach.
Behind the website are real people. We read postings. We answer emails. We help employers improve difficult-to-fill postings.
We don't measure success simply by clicks, traffic or the number of applications generated.
A smaller number of interested, qualified applicants can be far more valuable than hundreds of poorly matched applications.
Ultimately, the measure that matters is whether the right people find each other.
The environmental challenges facing Canada and the world have become much more urgent since GoodWork began. At the same time, the range of people and organizations working on solutions has grown enormously.
We want GoodWork to continue evolving with that community while remaining true to what made it useful in the first place: independence, accessibility, relevance, and a genuine commitment to people and planet.
Whether you're looking for your first environmental job, changing careers, searching for meaningful work, or trying to find the right person for your organization:
Welcome to GoodWork.
