Position: Community Orchard and Garden Facilitator

Position Description

Overview

The Seasonal Orchard Coordinator would be employed from mid May until October 31, 2025, and be eligible to reapply for the 2026 season. This position is responsible for the recruiting volunteers, organizations, and events to the orchard as well as to oversee repairs, maintenance, and coordination of the McCauley Community Orchard – which includes the community garden. This position is an integral part to rejuvenating the orchard, activating the space, and ensuring that it continues to be a hub for community members to meet, play and learn.

Reports to

This position reports to the Executive Director of Sustainable Food Edmonton.

Hours/rate

This position is 20 hours per week, mix between home office and outdoors on location.

2025: May, 2025 (start date TBC) to October 31, 2025.

This position has remuneration of $25/hour with a $1,000 honorarium at the completion of the 2025 season.

Determination of Contractor or Employee status to be determined.

Re-application for the 2026 season will be required.

The schedule is flexible- pre-approval by the ED will be required.

There are no health/wellness benefits for this position. WCB coverage will be provided.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Recruit and manage volunteers/groups/organizations as Master Orchardists, including attending meetings.
  • Recruit, manage and maintain community garden volunteers and plots.
  • Recruit organizations and community members to host events at the orchard site.
  • Attend all related meetings, events and workshops.
  • Organize, manage and maintain all volunteers
  • Organize, oversee and lead the spring and fall work bees and any other required workbees.
  • Organize and manage the maintenance, repairs and beautification of the site. 2023 will include organizing the shed, purchasing new shed, pricing temporary fencing, new compost bins, pricing new raised beds, labelling trees/shrubs and perennials, and more as budget allows.
  • Work within a set budget- as provided.
  • Work closely with ED and the rest of the SFE team.
  • Present to the board of directors in the fall.
  • Organize and manage all onsite events and workshops.
  • Work closely with other community organizations including the building tenants.
  • Meet monthly with the staff team of SFE.
  • Keep orchards and gardens clean, maintained and well cared for. Including mowing, garbage and debris cleanup etc.
  • Maintain a professional image and reputation in person, online and in any communications
  • Adhere to strict confidentiality in regards to SFE accounts, volunteers, employees, and stakeholders.
  • Ensure any conflicts are reported to the ED as soon as possible.
  • Work safely and with required PPE at the orchard site.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Must be over 18 years of age
  • Must be physically able – working outdoors, on your feet, carrying 25 lbs or more.
  • High School Diploma
  • Post-secondary education in communications, environment, community building, social services or business is an asset.
  • Knowledge in gardening, fruit trees, permaculture and horticulture and assets.
  • Must have a home office and your own computer, wifi and cell phone.
