Communications Coordinator

Position: Communications Coordinator
Organization: The Royal Astronomical Society of Canada
Location: Toronto or remote, anywhere in Canada

We are looking for a passionate and enthusiastic individual with some background in astronomy to help us run our social media and communications here at the National Office of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada. This position is for a one-year maternity leave back-fill.

The Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC) is Canada’s premier amateur astronomy organization. We support about 4500 members in 30 local Centres across Canada. Our mission is to enhance the understanding of and inspire curiosity about the Universe through public outreach, education, and support for astronomical research. We have 3 full-time staff, as well as this part-time role, with all other work being done by volunteers. The National Office's role is to support the Centres and members of the RASC across Canada with administrative support, knowledge sharing, advertising and more.

This role has some basic requirements and responsibilities, but there is a lot of room for growth within it based on the candidate's preferences. The successful candidate is encouraged to bring their own creativity and inspiration to the role and follow any opportunities within the role that excite them. As such, we’re looking for someone who is self-motivated, enthusiastic and creative.

Skills:

  • Proven experience in a communications role
  • Strong writing skills in a variety of contexts, including targeting information to specific audiences
  • Experience with Canva, Photoshop, or other photo editing software
  • Experience managing social media in a professional context
  • Experience with scheduling software (e.g. Hootsuite)
  • Experience with WordPress
  • A bachelor’s degree in astronomy or a related field, or strong, demonstrated interest in astronomy
  • Comfortable in a virtual / remote work environment

Responsibilities and duties:

  • Manage RASC National social media accounts, including…
    • Gathering and posting regular content from members, Centres, and National Office.
    • Running long-term campaigns based on Society needs (e.g. sales campaigns, citizen science promotions)
    • Answering messages as necessary, or forwarding message onto the correct party
    • Social media accounts include LinkedIn, Facebook, TikTok, X and Instagram
  • Write, collate and distribute RASC National communications to members, including…
    • The RASC Weekly Newsletter - includes Centre events that are open to the public that week, training courses, urgent updates
    • The Monthly Bulletin - includes important updates, overviews of astronomical events that month, requests of volunteers, advertisements for sales etc.
  • Host social media training sessions for our members
  • Media relations, including writing and distributing press releases and responding to media requests
  • Liaise with external partners on shared campaigns
  • Meet with other RASC staff and volunteers as necessary to complete the above tasks

Job details

  • 20 hours a week at any time of the day or week – flexible scheduling
  • $17.70/hr
  • Work from home, anywhere in Canada (candidates in Toronto are welcome to work from our office several days a week if they prefer)
  • One year contract - maternity leave backfill
