We believe the rich diversity among our students and the communities we serve should be reflected within our workforce. As educators, we believe it is important to act and show leadership in advancing the principles of reconciliation, equity, diversity, and inclusion in our community.

The Bay Area Climate Change Council (BACCC) is a collective impact initiative of community leaders working to accelerate climate action in the Burlington-Hamilton “Bay Area” region.

In order to reach net zero carbon by 2050, BACCC is working with partners to advocate and support smart policies and projects that will cut carbon emissions in both Bay Area communities by 50% by the year 2030.

To achieve this will require big changes to new and existing buildings, transportation networks, and local industry. This includes:

  • Improving low carbon modes of transportation like biking, walking and public transit
  • Increasing zero carbon vehicle uptake for all classes of vehicles (electric or alternative fuels)
  • Retrofitting existing dwellings
  • Building new buildings to a zero carbon standard
  • Reducing local industrial emissions through innovation and without carbon leakage
  • Ensuring low-carbon and reliable energy for our region

To do this, BACCC develops turn-key policy solutions on climate issues. It convenes Implementation Teams (BACCITs) that bring together actors in the public sector, industry and community to work together on key priority projects that will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the Bay Area. These projects will focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation, buildings and industry sectors.

The Bay Area Climate Change Council Manager will support BACCC by overseeing the coordination, evaluation and promotion of BACCC’s projects and that of its Implementation Teams (BACCITs). The ideal candidate will be a systems thinker and problem solver who has extensive experience in successfully leading multi-sector projects and collective impact initiatives. The candidate will also have experience in strategic planning, policy analysis, and government relations.

BACCC is supported by the Cities of Burlington and Hamilton and is a “coalition in residence” at the Centre for Climate Change Management at Mohawk College.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Collaborate with BACCC, the BACCITs, and key stakeholders to design, implement and evaluate priority climate change projects and programs that have the potential to significantly reduce GHGs – these projects will include clear objectives, milestones, performance metrics, timeframes, implementation roles and responsibilities.
  • Ensure BACCC, BACCITs and stakeholder relationships are well-managed and leading to successful multi-sector projects through effective communication and stakeholder relations.
  • Continue to update and evolve BACCC’s strategic plan and corresponding work plans.
  • Provide regular progress reports to inform BACCC, BACCITs, as well as City Councils, key stakeholders and the public informed and engaged.
  • Effectively fundraise through grants, partnerships, and donations to secure resources for BACCIT projects and programs.
  • Perform policy analysis and government relations activities to forward climate policy in the region.
  • Support the design, implementation, and evaluation of engagement and outreach campaigns and assets, including events, digital, and print campaigns.

What you’ll bring to the role:

  • A minimum four (4) year Degree in Business, Urban and Regional Planning, Policy or Political Science, Engineering, Sustainability, Environmental Science, and/or Environmental Resource Management.
  • A Masters Degree or Graduate level studies will be considered an asset.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Experience in supporting collective impact initiatives.
  • Experience in multi-stakeholder engagement and outreach.
  • Digital marketing or experience in maintaining website is considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility.
  • The ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse students, employees, and communities.

A minimum of five (5) years of experience with the following:

  • Demonstrated success in leading multi-stakeholder projects, in particular, collectives or coalitions.
  • Experience in leading the development, implementation and evaluation of sustainability and/or climate change-related projects.
  • Demonstrated experience in stakeholder relations and communications.
  • Experience and understanding of climate change policy, best practices and innovative opportunities.
  • Experience in multi-stakeholder engagement and outreach.

What we offer:

  • Opportunity to gain experience and build relationships at a Hamilton/Niagara Top Employer.
  • Access to professional development opportunities.
  • Option to enroll in Defined Benefit pension plan (CAAT) with contributions matched by Mohawk College.
  • Discounted rate for full-service athletic facility and instructor-led classes.
  • Opportunities to engage in wellness events and activities.
