Position: Recreational Rowing Coach

About Halifax Rowing Club

Halifax Rowing Club (HRC) is located on the historic and beautiful North West Arm in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The purpose of HRC is to provide recreational and competitive rowing in our community and to actively encourage participation in the sport. HRC believes in principles of inclusion and assisting people to be active in sport.

Position overview

HRC’s Recreational Coach should bring a genuine passion for rowing, shared experience, and guidance for rowing. This role includes adult and/or junior programs (recreational or learn-to-row) and provides boat/equipment assistance, basic coaching instruction, guidance to athletes seeking feedback, and safety support. This role is a supporting position, working with other HRC coaches to deliver programs. Successful applicants would work as a team to provide a welcoming and safe environment.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Actively create a welcoming and safe environment during each rowing session
  • Provide support, instruction and coaching for all participants in HRC’s recreational/fitness or learn-to-row programs
  • Ensure all safety policies and procedures are being adhered to
  • Communicate effectively with the Head Coach, other staff and volunteers regarding athlete development, program delivery, safety concerns, equipment etc for the smooth, safe operation of the programs

Qualifications and experience

  • Completion of RCA Rowing Essentials Online Modules (required before start of season)
  • RCA Learn-to-Row Certified or willingness to work toward certification
  • Prior experience as a rowing coach working with both junior and adult rowers is desirable
  • Pleasure craft operator’s card (required before start of season)
  • Current qualifications in First Aid and CPR (required before start of season)
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • VHF or marine radio certification (training will be provided)

Employment terms

  • Timeframe: June to August or June to October depending on candidate availability
  • Hours/Week:
    • Part Time or Full-Time: Total hours variable to match coaches availability. Schedules will be developed based on a combination of programming needs and applicant availability.
    • Possible shifts include weekday mornings and evenings as well as weekend mornings.
  • Starting at $18/hr and up, depending on experience

Criminal record check
