About re•generation

re•generation is a Canadian youth-led nonprofit empowering the next generation of leaders to re•think how the economy can better serve human and ecological well-being. Our flagship campaign, REWORK YOUR FUTURE, is a multi-year initiative to mobilize the labour of young people to accelerate the just transition to a clean economy.

Our organization has three main pillars:

  • REWORK YOUR FUTURE – Building career development tools for students and young professionals who want to contribute to a more sustainable and just society.
  • RETHINK YOUR SOCIETY – Empowering youth to have conversations about systems change while advocating for public policy changes that advance a regenerative economy.
  • REIMAGINE YOUR SCHOOL – Developing action and capacity-building toolkits for student leaders across the country to influence change within their schools.

re•generation began originally in 2019 as the “Canadian Business Youth Council for Sustainable Development,” emerging out of a network of sustainability clubs at business schools across the country. In 2022 we rebranded to “re•generation” to become more inclusive of all youth (not just business students), and to invoke the idea that the future of sustainability is regenerative–and that we’re the generation who will make it a reality.

Position Summary

The Managing Director (MD) plays a critical operational leadership role within the organization, working closely with the Executive Director and leadership team to ensure the smooth, effective, and accountable day-to-day functioning of the organization.

While the Executive Director is primarily responsible for setting the strategic vision, representing the organization publicly, and leading high-level partnerships and fundraising, the Managing Director ensures the systems, resources, and structures are in place to deliver on that vision. The MD oversees internal operations, team management, financial processes, and administrative functions to ensure alignment with the organization's strategic plan and long-term sustainability.

This is an ideal role for someone with strong operational leadership experience, excellent organizational skills, and a collaborative, team-oriented approach to problem-solving.

Key Responsibilities

Operations & Team Management

  • Lead day-to-day operations of the organization to ensure efficiency and alignment with strategic objectives.
  • Oversee internal processes, systems, and structures to support a high-performing, empowered staff team.
  • Support the development, implementation, and enforcement of organizational policies, in collaboration with the Executive Director.
  • Lead internal risk management processes and ensure operational compliance with relevant policies and regulations.
  • Oversee the organization’s tech stack, ensuring integration, maintenance, and alignment of all tools and platforms with operational needs.
  • Proactively manage data security, privacy compliance, and user access controls.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, and staff development processes to build and retain a high-impact team.

Financial Management & Administration

  • Oversee day-to-day financial operations, including bookkeeping, payroll coordination, expense management, and reconciliation processes.
  • Prepare and manage organizational budgets in collaboration with the Executive Director; track expenses and provide regular financial updates.
  • Maintain accurate financial records and reporting systems, ensuring accountability and transparency.
  • Lead preparation for the organization’s annual audit and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, including CRA filings.
  • Manage contracts, payments, and disbursements related to programs, partnerships, and fiscal sponsorships.

Project & Resource Management

  • Ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope, and aligned with organizational goals.
  • Lead resource allocation processes, ensuring staff and budgets are appropriately assigned to meet programmatic needs.
  • Maintain and improve operational tools and systems (e.g., project management platforms, CRM systems) to support efficient operations and stakeholder engagement.
  • Support cross-team collaboration and information-sharing to ensure alignment and effective communication across the organization.

Fund & Partnership Development

  • Support the Executive Director in donor stewardship, grant writing, and reporting processes.
  • Collaborate on the development of fundraising strategies that ensure long-term financial sustainability.

Strategic Implementation & Organizational Development

  • Work closely with the Executive Director and leadership team to translate strategic goals into operational plans.
  • Contribute to organizational decision-making and problem-solving to ensure effective implementation of strategy.
  • Monitor progress toward organizational goals and lead continuous improvement efforts across operational areas.
  • Participate in strategic planning, governance discussions, and organizational development initiatives.

Given the emergent nature of our work, this role will evolve over time — requiring adaptability, collaborative leadership, and a willingness to shape new systems as the organization grows.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in operations, organizational management, or nonprofit leadership.
  • Strong financial literacy and experience with budgeting, financial and accounting oversight, and compliance.
  • Track record of successfully leading teams and building effective operational systems.
  • Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and project management skills.
  • Collaborative leadership style with the ability to build trust and motivate teams.
  • Familiarity with nonprofit governance, HR processes, and donor stewardship practices.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, evolving organization with distributed teams.
  • Proficiency in both French and English is considered a strong asset, given the national scope of our work.
  • Experience working with Slack, Monday.com, G-Suite, and Quickbooks is highly preferred.
