Job Title: Proposal Writer

BACKGROUND:

The Lower Fraser Fisheries Alliance (LFFA) is a collaboration of 24 First Nation communities from the mouth of the Fraser River to the Fraser Canyon, and LFFA is guided by an Executive Committee. Established in 2010, the organization engages government, industry, stakeholders, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to establish best practices, coordinate resources and aid in developing First Nation capacities in fisheries and aquatic management.. The LFFA provides advocacy, communications, coordination and technical capacity support to First Nation communities and their leaders .
The primary focus of the Proposal Writer position is to assist the LFFA in developing a sustainable funding model to maintain current capacity and support future operations. The role will provide the successful candidate with a unique and diverse working environment and the opportunity to make meaningful change with the LFFA and First Nation communities in the Lower Fraser River region.

POSITION:

The Proposal Writer works directly with LFFA Administration and Biology Departments to secure resourcing and ensure the long-term sustainability of the Departments within the organization. This involves leading proposal applications, monitoring and reporting process through coordination with LFFA staff. The Grants Coordinator will also manage the proposal funding cycle for the LFFA and develop a process to adequately resource staff and projects long-term. This will require the identification of new partnership opportunities, and the maintenance of working relationships with funders, government, NGOs, academia and other interest groups. The Proposal Writer will also seek to better understand and integrate Indigenous Knowledge (IK) into projects and processes, including establishment of an IK Department. This position will report to the Finance and Administration Manager.

Activities will include:

1) Proposal writing, reporting and project support
• Work with LFFA Management and staff to lead grant proposal development
• Lead the process of Interim and Final reporting with relevant LFFA staff
• Develop key understandings of LFFA projects and individual funding needs
• Develop a proposal management plan to sustainably fund LFFA Projects
• Ensure Department Heads are aware and knowledgeable of upcoming funding through open communication and up-to-date funder lists
• Lead quarterly grant planning, tracking and funding meetings with the Finance Officer, Managers and Department Heads
• Monitor grants for financial and program compliance

2) Strategic planning and partnerships
• Engage with fisheries organizations at the local, regional, provincial, national, and international scales to support stewardship, Indigenous Knowledge, science, and technical advancement of Nations and the  LFFA.
• Seek and identify potential funding partnerships
• Establish and maintain relationships with key partners and funders
• Engage with local, provincial, federal and international governments to obtain a general understanding of their funding mandates and investments

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• Minimum of a B.Sc or equivalent in a natural resource related field with 5 years experience in a similar position.
• Registered Professional Biologist (R.P. Bio) designation is an asset.
• Demonstrated experience managing complex projects.
• Demonstrated experience working with consultants, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations.
• Ability to manage and prioritize heavy workloads involving multiple tasks and changing priorities.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills and proven ability to establish rapport with people of all educational and occupational backgrounds.
• The ability to work in a team environment and independently.
• Access to transportation to attend off site meetings and engagements.
• Proficient in MS Office suite
• Demonstrated experience working in fisheries and/or with First Nation communities
• Valid BC Driver’s License;
• Valid Criminal Record Check;
