Position Summary

Reporting to the Manager, Climate Leadership, the Program Coordinator provides support for the development, planning and implementation of municipal climate action priorities, policy related research and analytical support while participating and supporting community outreach for the Better Homes Kingston program, Kingston Community Climate Action Fund, the Neighbourhood Climate Action Champions and the implementation of the Climate Leadership Plan community actions.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support the city’s Climate Leadership Division through research, creation of briefing materials, support to engagement on the Better Homes Kingston program and the community implementation of the Climate Leadership Plan actions.
  • Develop, coordinate and implement new partnerships, community programs, and workshops that engage the community in climate action.
  • Conduct research and analysis, using qualitative and quantitative data in areas including mitigation strategies for the reduction of ghg emissions, carbon budget and climate lens.
  • Assist with or lead public education programs including the implementation of the Neighbourhood Climate Action Champions and the Kingston Community Climate Action Fund.
  • Participate as a municipal representative on internal and external working groups and committees.
  • Maintain awareness of local municipal issues, including monitoring social media websites, newspapers, and other local media coverage.
  • Perform benchmarking studies, and research best practices.
  • Provide general office administration support.
  • Respond to employee and/or customer enquiries in person, over the phone, or by email.
  • Contribute to the efficient and effective delivery of projects and initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications, Competencies

Four (4) year post secondary degree in Environmental Studies, Public Administration, Public Relations, Political Science, or related field, (a focus on climate change is preferred).

Minimum two (2) years related experience or an understanding of municipal politics, climate change mitigation and adaptation acquired through cooperative program work placement, course work, volunteer placements and/or professional work experience

Must demonstrate corporate values of Belonging, Collaboration, Accountability, and Innovation.

Skills, Abilities, Work Demands

  • Understanding of the program development process and how to implement new initiatives (including planning, systems thinking, costing, team building, implementation strategies, and monitoring and evaluation techniques).
  • Experience in working with the public on the development and implementation of community programs.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong customer service skills, including the ability to establish good working relationships with a variety of internal and external clients and the public.
  • Ability to work effectively, independently and as a team member.
  • Intermediate skills in MS Office.
  • Organizational and time management skills with a capacity to learn.
  • Must obtain and maintain a satisfactory criminal record check.
