Marine Project Coordinator

Temporary until March 31, 2028, with the possibility of extension, Full Time

Full-time 80 hours biweekly $30.17-$38.79/hour

Position Summary

The Marine Project Coordinator will play a key role in developing, coordinating, and advancing marine related projects and initiatives for the Esquimalt Nation. The Marine Project Coordinator will be responsible for supporting the Marine Program Manager in developing on-water programming to support environmental monitoring and stewardship as well as emergency preparedness and response. They will also be responsible for coordinating marine-related community events and engaging with partner agencies, Nations, and working groups. The MPC position is set to run until March 31, 2028, with the possibility of an extension depending on funding.

Primary Responsibilities

• Assist in identifying stewardship priorities and primary concerns in the Marine Territory.
• Contribute to the development of operational protocols and policies for the marine team.
• Plan and coordinate marine-related events and programs for Esquimalt members.
• Connect with community members to understand and compile input on the topics of marine ecosystems, marine safety, cultural relationships with ocean, and the blue economy.
• Collaborate with Federal representatives (including Transport Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Canadian Coast Guard and others) on marine safety, environmental protection, and marine stewardship initiatives.
• Review and provide input on technical documents, including frameworks, policies or discussion papers.
• Conduct research on coastal ecological systems, including water-based data collection.
• Manage environmental and socio-economic data.
• Develop and maintain partnerships with key stakeholders in the region.
• Participate in training and learning experiences to support success in this role.
• Advocate for and ensure that Esquimalt Nation’s interests, rights, and title are respected in all marine initiatives.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Strong knowledge of marine ecosystems, knowledge specific to the Salish Sea is an asset.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact with people from various backgrounds.
• Knowledge of the Canadian Fisheries Act, Species at Risk Act, Marine Shipping Act, and other Federal Acts linked to marine initiatives are an asset.
• Knowledge of Federal initiatives, such as CEMS (cumulative effects of marine shipping), OPP (ocean’s protection plan), marine spatial planning, the Salish Sea Initiative, etc. are an asset.
• Well-developed problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
• Strong ability to read, analyze, and extract pertinent information from documents.
• Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
• Intermediate proficiency level in Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office.
• Physical ability and willingness to work on a small vessel.
• Knowledge of scientific processes, integration of different ways of knowing an asset.
• An understanding of the Douglas Treaty.
• Knowledge of Esquimalt/Indigenous people and culture

Training, Education, and Experience

• Diploma(s), Degree(s), or relevant combination of education and experience (3+ years) in marine biology, environmental studies, geography, political ecology, or related field.
• At least two (2) years of experience in project management.
• Experience working on vessels (vessel operator certification is an asset).
• Experience in quantitative or qualitative data collection.
• Experience designing and implementing research (an asset).
• Training or Experience in GIS (an asset)
• Experience working in an Indigenous Community.
• Valid BC Driver’s license
