Position: Kelp Nursery Manager

Compensation: $55,000 $70,000 (contract total) dependent on experience

Position Summary
MDC is seeking a dedicated Kelp Nursery Manager to lead the planning, construction, and operations of a kelp and seaweed nursery in Prince Rupert. This is a key role in advancing the region’s regenerative ocean farming capacity and supporting a growing mariculture economy.
In addition to managing the nursery, the Kelp Nursery Manager will oversee the planning and execution of the annual community scallop distribution and assist with tenure-related compliance and monitoring requirements.
The Kelp Nursery Manager will report to the Operations Manager and work closely with community and industry partners.
Key Responsibilities
Nursery Design & Setup
- Lead the design, layout, and construction of a kelp nursery facility
- Coordinate with builders and suppliers to ensure a timely and functional setup
- Oversee equipment selection and installation
Nursery Operations & Management
- Manage the daily operations of the nursery
- Develop and implement standard operating procedures for nursery management
- Monitor and maintain environmental conditions, water quality, and facility hygiene
Community Programs & Compliance
- Oversee the planning, coordination, and successful execution of the annual community scallop distribution
- Assist with tenure-related compliance and monitoring requirements, ensuring all operational activities align with regulatory and licensing standards
Reporting & Oversight
- Maintain records and documentation for all nursery processes
- Report regularly to the Operations Manager on progress, challenges, and milestones
- Support reporting requirements for funders or regulators as needed
Skills & Qualifications
- Background in marine biology, aquaculture, environmental sciences, or a related field
- Experience in hatchery or nursery operations (ideally seaweed or kelp-focused)
- Strong project management and problem-solving skills
- Comfortable working in a hands-on, technical environment
- Experience working with Indigenous communities or in remote coastal regions
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Valid driver’s license
