Position: Lead Weekend Nature Club Instructor
School: Toronto Nature School
Location: Toronto ON (Queen E / Beaches)

Number of Positions: 1
Position Type: Contract
Start Date: Saturday, September 14th times 8:30am – 1:00pm
Fall Session: Saturdays, Sept 14th – November 30th
Winter Session: Saturdays, January 18th – March 8th
Spring Session: Saturdays, April 5th – June 21st
Compensation: $23-$26

Responsibilities

– Communicate with parents and guardians via email (introduction emails, photos, updates after each class) –
– Email group updates and photos after class
– Email communications will cover both age groups of kids 4-10
– Monitor the email address and respond to emails in an appropriate manner
– Plan carry out meetings with Saturday team members once per term
– Plan weekly nature activities that engage children from ages 4-10
– Help facilitate planning between team members
– Plan activities that relate to the current seasons and to the spaces
– Plan activities that can take place at both the beach and the ravine
– Provide back up plans to move to indoor spaces during inclement weather
– Ensure that participants are having a fun, safe, and engaging high quality learning experience

– Be comfortable around water, beach. Monitor children vigilantly
– Supervise three staff members and provide direction, feedback
– Communicate with parents and guardians via email about program updates, changes, when possible, document learning with photos and occasionally send photos to parents of their child participating
– Supervise and ensure children are being safe and supported at all times during their program
– Provide other staff and volunteers with feedback and instructions
– Ensure that students are on time for pick up at 12:00 pm at Queen st. East location. Or other location if previously arranged
– Follow Health and Safety protocols and procedures guidelines
– Clean up after activities ensuring that the learning and playing areas are clean, organized-and safe to ensure the Health & Safety of all participants.
– Maintain the safety of children, understanding sun/ snow safety.
– Engage in play based and developmentally appropriate programming for all
– Collaborate with other staff to share ideas.
– Assess risks and risk management of sites and children, perform a site check upon arrival
– Ensure first aid kits and contact information are properly handled and stored.
– Encourage community culture
– Familiarize yourself with the school philosophy’s and forms
– Other duties as required

Qualifications

– Teaching Qualifications / Graduate or currently enrolled with an ECE/ Education Program/ Forest School Practitioners course is an asset
– Extensive Experience working with children
– Love for the outdoors
– Current First Aid and CPR with level C ( to be obtained)
– Police Vulnerable Sectors Check ( to be obtained during first 3 months)
– Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication skills with parents/ guardians, campers and staff
– Experience and sensitivity in dealing with members of all cultural and racial backgrounds, including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity.
– Physically capable of working in all weather conditions, carrying a backpack, carrying learning materials.
– Ability to walk for long periods on uneven terrain
– Understand play-based learning, outdoor learning and principles of risky play.
