Position: Food Share Coordinator

About the SSI Farmland Trust Food Share Program

The Food Share Program brings islanders together to harvest, share, and celebrate the abundance of locally grown food. In 2024 we harvested over 15,000 lbs of excess fruit from trees and vines across the island and shared it with the community. Harvests are shared equally amongst landholders, volunteers, and community organizations. We also host monthly food exchanges.

Food Share Coordinator Description

Position Type: Seasonal and Part Time: 35 hrs/week

Applicants must be under 30 and a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or refugee at the time of application (as per grant requirements).

The Food Share Coordinator will manage the Food Share Program, which involves planning harvests with treeholders, communicating with volunteers, preparing for and leading harvests, and facilitating monthly food exchanges.

Location: Administrative work (e.g. preparation for harvests) and the food exchanges will take place at our office located at the Root on 189 Beddis Road. Harvests will require travel throughout Salt Spring Island.

Training and Food Safe Certification will be included.

Hourly Rate: $25/hour

Responsibilities
● Scheduling harvests and coordinating volunteers through our online database
● Preparing for and leading harvests
● Storing and managing fruit and produce inventory
● Coordinating distribution and delivery of harvest to community partners
● Facilitating monthly food exchanges
● Marketing support
● Other Food Share adjacent activities

Qualifications
● Must be under 30 years old at time of application
● 1+ years experience planning and coordinating volunteer activities, preferably in food security, food justice, or community-based nonprofits.
● Basic data entry skills
● Strong communication skills – written and verbal.
● Friendly with excellent people skills.
● Safety conscious
● Passion for social equity and food justice.
● Ability to lift heavy equipment, including ladders and boxes of fruit.
● Valid Driver’s License.

Position Timeline
● Applications due: June 15, 2025
● Start date: July 1, 2025, flexible within a few days
● End date: October 31, 2025
