Start Date: Ideally, candidates available to start June 3, 2024.
Duration: From June 3, 2024 to March 31, 2025 with potential for extension.
Compensation: $20.74 per hour, monthly cellphone allowance and ability to influence a flexible schedule.

Job Description

Restoration Field Technician

Complexity and Scope of the position

Under the direct supervision of the Restoration Field Technician Supervisor, management from the Operations Manager, and the mentorship from the Program Director, the Restoration Field Technician will work together as a team to accomplish the goals and activities of the FVWC Watershed Programs.

Key Responsibilities

Tasks and Responsibilities Include:

Operations

(>90 %)

FIELD SUPPORT – Tasks may include:

• Harvesting and planting live stales and whips willow for FVWC plantings.
• Assistance with site preparation work including invasive plant control, seeding, and mulching.
• Assistance with plant layout for volunteer plantings
• Planting trees and shrubs and installing beaver guards on sites during/after volunteer plantings.
• Ongoing maintenance work including invasive plant control, herbivory guard repair, planting, irrigation and watering of plants, integrated pest-management techniques.
• Assist FVWC with water quality, fish monitoring, amphibian monitoring,
• Mapping of watercourses, wetlands and riparian areas.
• Ensuring proper use, care and storage of FVWC field equipment.
• invertebrate sampling.
• Other tasks as assigned.
• Take photos before and after documenting each site.
• Ensure proper use, care and storage of FVWC field equipment.
• Maintain FVWC’s Ethical and Professional code of conduct.
• Maintain FVWC’s Health and Safety requirements.

Community

(<10 %)

COMMUNITY SUPPORT AND ENGAGEMENT – Tasks may include:

• General outreach and community event attendance.
• Participate in community events to promote FVWC projects, environments sustainability and healthy watersheds & inform people about actions to become better stewards.
• Engage public as FVWC representatives at public located sites as/if questions queries arise.
• Attend meeting and events on behalf of the FVWC.
• Work with volunteers, members & others on special assigned projects.

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Outside – Field Work. Hands-on, involves physical exertion -the ability to lift 50lbs, squatting, bending, extended time walking and standing. May be exposed to a wide range of weather conditions including heat, cold, wind and/or rain. At times this position may require you to operate equipment such as gas-powered hand tools. This position requires that you wear protective attire such as work gloves, hats, safety vests and footwear to protect yourself. *Training and protective equipment is provided by the employer.*

QUALIFICATIONS

EXPERIENCE:

• Previous field work experience
• Previous landscaping experience
• Previous experience with gas powered tools.
• Knowledge and identification of native flora and fauna.
• An understanding of local watershed challenges in the eastern Fraser Valley.
• Knowledge of habitat restoration and ability to identify species at risk, sensitive ecological areas, invasive species, and fish species.

SKILLS & ABILITIES

• Minor carpentry skills.
• Ability to organize daily workload by priorities.
• Must be able to meet deadlines in a fast-paced quickly changing environment.
• Ability to work well under seasonal peak periods and in changing environmental situations.
• Ability to work well within a team environment.

EDUCATION

• Grade 12
• Post-secondary education in biology, geography or ecological restoration would be an asset.

ELIGIBILITY & REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must:

• Have successful completion of a Police Information Check.
• Have successful completion of a Functional Abilities Assessment.
• Have a valid Class 5 BC driver’s licence, and/or valid BC CLASS 7 driver’s license (“N”).
• Must have access and use of a reliable vehicle to get to and from worksites located in Hope, Chilliwack, Abbotsford, Mission, Maple Ridge, and Langley.
• Willingness to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.
• Applicants local to the Fraser Valley, BC are preferred.
• Interest in local conservation issues.
• Maintain confidentiality as per organizational and legislative requirements.
• Maintain, promote, and enhance the company’s Health and Safety practices, audits, and procedures (i.e. WHMIS, Health and Safety Policies).

SUPPORTING EMPLOYEES

Restoration Field Technicians will be supported throughout their employment with FVWC from onboarding to continual supervision and mentorship and offboarding.
