Position: Conservation Specialist

Location: Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, the position requires residence in the NWT

Salary Range: $80,000 - $85,000 per annum

Duties:

Working in collaboration with the Executive Director the Senior Conservation Specialist has three key areas of responsibility:

1. Bring Science Based Perspectives to Conservation Initiatives and Issues in the NWT

• Use science based information to inform public facing conservation campaigns including to support the establishment of Indigenous led protected areas;
• Review documents such as land use, protected areas or species recovery plans, legislative or government policy positions. Use science based evidence and information to write comments, positions or recommendations that influence conservation centered decision making;
• Participate in multi-party collaborations and working groups;
• Manage science based field projects that benefit our conservation campaigns;
• Have an awareness of and track conservation issues that are relevant to the NWT;
• Participate on CPAWS National level conservation committees.

2. Contribute to CPAWS-NWT Program Leadership

• Participate as a member of our conservation leadership team;
• Lead, mentor and support field staff or volunteers in their efforts to implement projects;
• Communicate your project work within CPAWS-NWT to support the Executive Director and Board of Directors on strategic level decision making;
• Contribute to resourcing your work by identifying funding opportunities, writing funding proposals and reporting;
• Contribute to developing and managing project budgets.

3. External Communications

• Serve as a spokesperson for your project work in media, conferences, events and for membership;
• Promote your work using social media and our chapter website;
• Write letters, reports, outreach materials and other communications in plain language or technical formats to compel decision makers and engage public audiences.

Qualifications:

• Proven expertise or 5 -10 years of work (a combination of relevant educational background and practical experience preferred) in conservation, biology, ecology, resource management, environmental sciences or studies, or a related field. A demonstration of other applied skills and work experience will also be considered.
• Excellent communication skills in writing, editing, and presentations, experience and confidence speaking to scientists, public audiences, and Indigenous Peoples;
• An understanding of conservation science and expertise in one or more areas of CPAWS-NWT’s initiatives, and a commitment to expand knowledge and experience to other areas over time;
• Effective at both collaborative and independent work;
• Willingness to travel for extended periods and flexibility to work evenings and weekends when required

About CPAWS-NWT:

CPAWS-NWT (cpawsnwt.org) is one of 13 Chapters of the Canadian Parks & Wilderness Society (CPAWS), which is a national non-profit conservation organization established in the 1960s. The NWT Chapter was founded in 1996 by a group of NWT volunteers and since 1999 has been supported by a volunteer Board of Directors and staff who work with public and Indigenous governments and organizations, communities, other non-government organizations and individuals to achieve conservation outcomes in the NWT.

CPAWS-NWT’s office is located at Sǫ̀mba K’è, Denendeh, on Chief Drygeese Territory; homeland and traditional territory of the Yellowknives Dene, and homelands of the North Slave Métis, and Tłı̨chǫ peoples.
