Position: Community Food and Greenhouse Coordinator

Position status: Full-time (32 hours/week, 4-day work week, Mon-Thurs).
Location: Prince Rupert, BC (The Coordinator will work onsite between the main community greenhouse and in our office).
Compensation: Hourly rate: $32-36/hour. Commensurate with experience and qualifications.

The Greenhouse Coordinator will join Ecotrust Canada’s Food Systems Program, which is based on Coast Ts’msyen territories in Prince Rupert, BC. Our team works towards creating collaborative, vibrant, and innovative local food economies built by and for communities, supported by local and regional food production and marketplaces that are resilient and sustainable.

Position Summary

Ecotrust Canada is seeking a passionate and community-oriented Greenhouse Coordinator. Working under the supervision of the Community Food Systems Innovation Program Manager, the Coordinator will lead school- and community-based food growing and programming efforts, with a special focus on building relationships with Indigenous communities and coordinating culturally relevant garden programming.
This role is ideal for someone with hands-on growing experience, strong organizational and outreach skills, and a commitment to food sovereignty, sustainability, and Indigenous collaboration.

Key Responsibilities

Garden & Greenhouse Management

• Oversee active school greenhouses and outdoor garden spaces in collaboration with teachers, students, and SD52’s Food Coordinator.
• Manage Community Greenhouse and growing spaces
• Coordinate Canada Summer Jobs Student activities
• Co-develop annual garden plans, planting schedules, and crop rotations.
• Practice regenerative growing techniques that reflect traditional and ecological knowledge.
• Maintain healthy growing environments through transplanting, watering, weeding, seed saving, integrated pest management, and record-keeping.

Programming Coordination & Distribution

• Co-coordinate growing, harvesting and food-related programming, including volunteer stewardship.
• Assist the Program Manager with reporting, and partnership coordination to advance project goals and support community outcomes
• Support seasonal food distribution and education efforts in schools and community settings.

Weekly Market

• Co-coordinate weekly market in partnership with the City of Prince Rupert, including planning, setup, and community engagement.

Skills and Qualifications

Required:

• Education or lived experience working with the land and growing food, ideally in connection with Indigenous teachings or practices.
• Experience facilitating community gardening and volunteer programs.
• Experience engaging with Indigenous communities and supporting culturally grounded initiatives, such as Indigenous food forests or school-based programming that incorporates Sm’algyax language.
• Comfortable collaborating with SD52 staff and programs, including high school trades, foods, and language initiatives, to incorporate them into the broader greenhouse and food programming efforts.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, with a proactive and team-oriented mindset.
• Self-motivated, organized, and capable of working independently.
• The role is primarily outdoors and involves physical tasks in all weather. Ecotrust Canada will provide training, tools, and safety equipment as needed.
• Experience with gardening, food growing, or land-based practices is highly valued.
