About LEAF:

Leaders in Environmentally Accountable Foodservice (LEAF) is Canada’s only nationwide, non-profit foodservice certification program. Established in 2009, LEAF helps restaurants reduce their environmental impact and makes it easy for patrons to identify green restaurants. We work with all types of foodservice facilities, including restaurants, cafes, food trucks, campuses and tourist locations, to drive our mission of leading and advancing change towards sustainable foodservice operations.

About the position:

The Marketing and Communications Chair will be responsible for developing marketing strategies that create awareness and promote LEAF to a wide-ranging audience. The Chair will provide strategic leadership to the Marketing & Communications team, spearheading communication directives to meet organizational goals and guiding volunteer efforts to execute various marketing plans. It is expected that the Marketing and Communications Chair will be available to lead monthly marketing meetings and report progress to the BOD and Executive Director as needed.

We’re looking for a driven and creative marketing leader to join our Board of Directors as Chair, Marketing and Communications. This role is perfect for someone who’s ready to lead a passionate volunteer team, shape our national brand, and amplify LEAF’s voice across Canada.

Key responsibilities:

  • Strategic Leadership
    • Creation and implementation of integrated marketing and communications strategies and tactics

    • Act as Board and departmental lead on marketing, communications, and media plans, and delegate responsibilities to appropriate volunteers as needed

  • Digital & Content Marketing
    • Support with the updating and maintenance of the LEAF website to ensure content is accurate, compelling, and aligned with current campaigns

    • Overhaul and optimize social media channels to improve engagement and grow the organization’s digital footprint

    • Create a comprehensive marketing plan for May 2025 to May 2026, outlining campaign goals, key messages, and content calendars

    • Further develop the organization’s newsletter to enhance content strategy, increase readership, and drive community engagement

  • Communications & Media
    • Assist the Board President with media opportunities and communication strategies

    • Act as spokesperson or representative for marketing-related inquiries as needed

  • Team Management & Collaboration
    • Participate in virtual Board meetings 1-2 times a month, with potential for additional meetings with relevant people during key strategic decisions or issues/crises

    • Lead and support the future LEAF Marketing and Communications Team of volunteers, coordinating team meetings, delegating tasks, and ensuring team responsibilities are carried out

    • Participate in LEAF General Meetings 3 times a year and provide relevant updates to all LEAF volunteers

    • Leverage personal and professional networks to help identify volunteers, sponsors, and/or partners as needed

    • Follow through on Board-related action items in a timely and organized manner

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have formal education in marketing and communications
  • Possess professional experience with leadership accomplishments in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector
  • Have some knowledge and strong interest in environmental sustainability, especially related to the foodservice industry
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Be flexible, highly organized, and committed to meeting deadlines
  • Be self-motivated, professional and reliable

Board Terms

  • Virtual: work anywhere in Canada.
  • The LEAF Board of Directors is a working board. The time commitment is expected to be between 15-20 hours a month, which includes fulfilling action items, correspondence with LEAF, Board and departmental meetings and pre-reading.
  • The Chair, Marketing and Communications will serve a 2 year term and be eligible for re-appointment. Board meetings are by video conference and scheduled 1-2 times a month, with specific meeting schedules accommodating Board members’ schedules and needs. Service on LEAF’s Board of Directors is without remuneration.
  • Location: Work from anywhere in Canada.
