Act for Climate -- No more B.S.
Organization: Ecology Action Centre
Locations: Halifax & Nova Scotia

You might have noticed that we've been covering the Houston government's interesting plans for Nova Scotia's future on our social media over the past few weeks. From uranium to fracking to greenwashing and everything in between, we're calling it what it is: this is B.S.!

Here's how you can get involved!

  • Take action! [CLICK HERE] to find actions on uranium, fracking, attacks on our democracy and more!
  • Follow us on Instagram and Facebook, and share our No More B.S. posts!
  • Join the conversation! Is there an issue that you want to talk about that we're not covering? Make your own No More B.S. posts using the #NoMoreBS hashtag

Together we can send a strong message to the Houston government: no more false promises. No more greenwashing. No more power grabs or selling our future off to corporate interests. No More B.S.

Here are your volunteer opportunities for this week:

  1. Climate Commitment Badges @ Bridgewalk!
  2. Get Grounded at Common Roots!
  3. Walk in the Natal Day Parade with People Not Plunder!

1. Climate Commitment Badges @ Bridgewalk!

The EAC and HalifACT are looking for a volunteer to help promote and distribute the Climate Commitment Badges during Bridgewalk, August 3, from 2-4 p.m., at the MacDonald Bridge.

It's a great opportunity to spend time outdoors (with a beautiful harbour view!) encouraging HRM residents to get involved in climate action. You'll be representing EAC and working with a fun team of folks from HalifACT (HRM's Climate Change Office). Familiarity with the Climate Commitment Badges would be ideal – but we can give you a crash course in how to talk about this supportive, engaging program.

If you're interested, please contact Kate at katebrooks@ecologyaction.ca by July 31st! She'll send you the Bridgewalk info package and fill you in on the program's approach.

PS - Kate is NOT fond of heights, so would really love to have a volunteer take on this outreach task! Kate is NOT afraid of tortoises and, in lieu of attending Bridgewalk, WILL be attending Gus the Tortoise's Hatch Day at the NS Museum of Natural History... and she hopes to see you there :)

2. Get Grounded at Common Roots!

Common Roots is back and looking for volunteer help! If you're ready to dig in and help out this season, here's how you can help...

Common Roots Woodside:

Common Roots Woodside is excited to re-open, and once we do, we have LOTS of weeding and planting to do.

Would you like to volunteer with us?

No previous gardening experience is necessary. Ideally, volunteers are able to help out for a shift a week. Shifts are generally two hours on weekday mornings. In order to volunteer at Common Roots Woodside in Dartmouth, all volunteers must have an orientation first.

Contact hillary.lindsay@ecologyaction.ca to learn more and schedule a volunteer orientation.

Common Roots BiHi:

Common Roots BiHi Park is back for the summer! Drop in and volunteer during these times:

Tuesdays | 9:30 a.m.–12 p.m.
Saturdays | 1:30–4:30 p.m.

No gardening experience needed! Come as you are, get your hands in the soil, and connect with some amazing neighbours.

No need to register for these shifts, but we love when folks can come at least twice a month through the season. Don’t forget to bring weather appropriate clothing and a water bottle as we don’t have potable water on site.

What might you be doing? Weeding, watering, prepping garden beds, composting, harvesting — whatever the farm needs that day!

Can't make these times but still want to help? If you're comfy working independently, reach out to Nicola! We always need support with things like early morning watering, weed whacking, and general garden care.

Get in touch at nicola.nemy@ecologyaction.ca . We can’t wait to see you on the farm.

3. Walk in the Natal Day Parade with People Not Plunder!

Volunteer as part of a walking “float” in this year’s Halifax Natal Day Parade. People Not Plunder is looking for 20 enthusiastic volunteers to join in a fun and meaningful way to show up in the fight against uranium mining and exploration, while also enjoying the festive Natal Day atmosphere.

No special skills needed! Just a willingness to walk 4 kilometres, wear a costume or hold an anti-uranium sign and help spread awareness about this important issue.

Please bring weather appropriate clothing and good walking shoes. Costumes and signs will be provided!

This event is taking place Monday, August 4. Volunteers can arrive by 9 a.m. at the marshalling area (next to the Macdonald Bridge in Dartmouth), and the parade will wrap up around noon.

Please email peoplenotplunder@gmail.com if you're interested or want to learn more.

Let’s bring some energy (and eye-catching visuals) to the parade! The more feet on the ground, the bigger the impact!

That's the end of this week's Volunteer Call!
