Role: Wildlife Care Intern (volunteer position)
Organization: Turtle Pond Wildlife Centre

Location: Val Caron, near Sudbury, Ontario
Housing: limited free accom on-site (see below)

Turtle Pond Wildlife Centre (TPWC) treats over 900 orphaned, ill and injured native mammals, birds and reptiles per year with the goal of returning animals back to the wild.

We are looking for motivated, dedicated, responsible people to join our animal care team this summer.

Interns work alongside staff and volunteers while aquiring unique hands-on experience in all aspects of wildlife rehabilitation including admission, animal handling, stabilization, health monitoring, food preparation, habitat setup/maintenance and wound care. No training or experience is required but an interest in animal sciences is recommended.

Start Dates: Mid April to July 2024

Duration: 2-4 months. Work schedule is 5 days per week, 40-45 hours per week and includes day and afternoon shifts, weekends and holidays.

Accomodations: Limited free private sleep cabins available on-site (please specify if accomodations are required). Meals are not included. Transportation is recommended as wildlife centre is located in a rural setting, approximately 2 km from nearest bus stop

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • engage in a professional manner with the public while admitting wildlife in need
  • assist in triaging, stabilizing animals upon admission
  • responsible for set up and maintance of animal habitates (lots of cleaning involved)
  • prepare speces specific diets
  • keep pace with rigorous orphan feeding schedules as well as self feeding animals
  • maintain animal health records, includes detailed charting
  • assist in wound management and other medical needs
  • perform diagnostic procedures
  • keep work areas clean and tidy
  • communitcate effectively with staff and volunteers
  • other animal care related duties

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • Must be comfortable working in a fast paced team environment
  • Strong work ethic, positive attitude and a desire to learn
  • Able to perform physically demanding tasks, often outdoors in variety of weather conditions
  • Access to reliable transportation (nearest public transit is 2 km away)
  • Tetanus (updated within last 10 years) and current covid vaccinations required
  • Proof of vaccinations for rabies is required to work with rabies vector species
  • Must be able to commit to the full term of the prearranged intenship
