Volunteer Positions

Role: EcoRangers
Organization: Stanley Park Ecology
Location: Stanley Park, Vancouver, BC

Role Description

Spend your summer enjoying beautiful Stanley Park whilst sharing your passion for ecology with others. EcoRangers work in pairs as roving naturalists in the Park, answering visitors’ questions about local ecology and providing other important on-the-spot interpretation. Receive training from experts on Stanley Park’s wildlife, plants and natural history, and develop your skills in interpretation and public engagement.

Duties

  • In pairs, follow set walking routes through Stanley Park and educate park visitors about its natural and cultural history;
  • Set up and operate outdoor interpretation stations to educate visitors about a particular species or ecosystem;
  • Provide directions and answer questions from park visitors;
  • Returning volunteers, or those with equivalent experience, will be encouraged to act as mentors for volunteers that are new to the program.

Time Commitment

The EcoRangers program will operate between June 27th to September 6th.

Volunteers are expected to:

  • Commit to four 3.5 hour shifts each month throughout July and August
  • Attend mandatory volunteer orientation on June 27th (see “Training” for more details)
  • Participate in at minimum two skill development sessions, offered for volunteers throughout July and August.

Training

EcoRanger volunteers are required to attend a mandatory orientation day on Saturday, June 27th from 10am-5pm.

Throughout July and August, volunteers will have the opportunity to participate in ongoing volunteer skill development sessions, covering topics such as the ecology and natural history of Stanley Park, interpretation techniques, and more. As part of the volunteer role and ongoing training, EcoRangers are expected to participate in at least two skill building sessions throughout the summer. More details will be provided during orientation.

Requirements

  • Have a passion for ecology;
  • Be interested in public outreach and enjoy meeting and interacting with people in an engaging way;
  • Excellent verbal communication skills;
  • Have a passionate, enthusiastic, and confident nature;
  • High commitment level and reliable team player;
  • Be able to reliably sign up for shifts by the beginning of each month
  • Have a keen interest in nature and in Stanley Park – you do not need to know everything, just be willing to learn!
  • Willingness to be active outdoors, standing and walking for 3.5 hour shifts, in all weather conditions;
  • 16 years of age or older.
