About the Organization...

Be The Change Earth Alliance (BTCEA) is a bold, agile and creative charitable organization founded in 2005 with a mission to empower youth and community members to take personal and collective action for a just, sustainable and thriving world. Our flagship program, Student Leadership for Change (SLC), is an online library of learning resources that enable teachers to engage their students in meaningful learning, dialogue, reflection and action on climate, environmental and social justice topics. SLC engages thousands of students per year through the network of over 1,400 BC teachers who are actively registered for the program. The SLC holistic approach covers a full spectrum of ways participants can ‘be the change’ to address global issues, from individual, school and community actions to political advocacy. Beyond SLC, BTCEA works to educate and empower youth through workshops, storytelling training, and hands-on mentorship.

About the Role

The CARE Program Assistants will support the project lead of Be the Change’s Climate Action, Resilience, and Emotions (CARE) initiative in School Districts 23 and 73. This project will support youth in the Central Okanagan and the Thompson-Nicola regions to take climate action and navigate climate grief.

CARE is a 2-part workshop that will be facilitated for youth in community centers and schools. These workshops will mobilize a systems-thinking and global equity lens to empower youth through hope and agency – the most effective tools to overcome climate anxiety.

Specific responsibilities include:

• Managing logistics, scheduling, communication, and outreach for student workshops
• Delivering workshops to participating youth classrooms and groups, in person and via Zoom
• Supporting the project lead and other BTCEA staff to build relationships and network with teachers, principals, school district administrators, and other local organizations or groups (including Indigenous-led organizations or groups)
• Supporting the training of facilitators
• Helping ensure our programs centre equity and social justice, and integrate intersectional perspectives

Past experience with environmental education is a strong asset, but not mandatory, as Be the Change staff will support the incumbent to learn necessary skills. There are also potential opportunities to join other BTCEA work based on the incumbent’s interest.

We are hiring two Program Assistant positions: one located in Kelowna, BC, and one located in Kamloops, BC. Applicants must be located in the vicinity of either Kelowna or Kamloops, in order to facilitate in-person workshops in the region. These are part-time, 5-8 hour per week positions at a wage of $21.00-$22.00/hour. Preference will be given to applicants that have some availability during typical school hours (9AM-3PM M-F). This is a contract position, starting as soon as possible and concluding by May 2026 (with possible extension based on available funding).

This is a hybrid position that involves a combination of desk work that can occur at home, and facilitating workshops in person. A valid driver's licence for Canada and access to a car to drive to in-person workshops in the region is an asset but not required. This position may be partially funded by a federal government youth wage subsidy (see eligibility criteria below).

Qualifications

• Genuine interest or passion in BTCEA’s work, values, approach
• Strong workshop facilitation and presentation skills
• Lived experience that could inform weaving social justice and intersectional perspectives into BTCEA’s work
• Organized and detail-oriented with strong time-management skills to set and meet deadlines
• Confidence working with youth aged 11-18

Assets

• Strong, clear, and concise written communication (folks for whom English is NOT their first language are still highly encouraged to apply)
• Familiarity with digital tools such as Slack, Google Drive, Monday.com and Microsoft Office
• Self-starter who can take initiative, but also knows when to ask questions and for support
• Collaborative worker; skilled and comfortable working closely with others
• Education or employment background in anti-oppression or intersectionality
• Self-motivated, creative, and positive, with a ‘can-do’ willingness to learn
• Kind, empowering and glad-to-help others team player
• Experience taking action related to the climate, environment, social justice
• Able to develop systems and processes to execute plans and track results
• Professional or lived experience developing partnerships and relationships with Indigenous groups/nations/stakeholders

Youth Wage Subsidy – Eligibility Requirements

This position may be partially funded by a youth wage subsidy, offered by the federal government to employers hiring youth who meet these criteria:

• are between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
• are legally entitled to work in Canada (ONLY candidates with Canadian citizenship, Permanent Residency or a person who has been granted refugee status); and,
• self-assess as underemployed, meaning they are employed below their level of education, outside their field of study, or hold part-time employment.
