Position: Community Animator
Type: age 30 & under / summer
Organization: Sustainable Brant/Better Brant

Location: between Brantford & Hamilton on the rail trail 
Housing: option of on-site rental accommodation

Eligibility: Canadian citizen, permanent resident or refugee, 30 years or younger
Term: 2 months, with possibility for ongoing work

We...

• promote best practices for sustainable land use planning and protection of the local environment with a focus on Brant County,
• Research ecological and sustainability issues (including waste reduction with a focus on food rescue and redistribution, and reduction of exposure to toxins (e.g. pesticides, toxic emissions)
• Work to protect farmland, natural heritage and water, and prevent sprawl,
• Support inclusive, transparent governance at the municipal, provincial and federal level by fostering community education and engagement, and
• Foster inclusive rural communities with a special focus on migrant farm workers

Job Description:

You would be involved in helping with some of the following issues:

Facilitating workshops and events

• related to sustainability topics (such as conservation, control of invasive species, tree care, restoration of wetlands, eco-tourism, birding, plant walks, farmland protection, sustainable land use planning and inclusive rural community, public transit) and
• event promotion.
• Some physical labour is involved in preparing for events such as landscaping, moving equipment and tables, cleaning, sorting and distributing rescued food etc.

Community Consulting and Education

• helping residents to learn about and participate in policy making to protect farmland, water and natural areas
• Facilitating workshops and events (e.g. teach-ins, film nights, hosting guest speakers)

Providing outreach:

• newsletter, social media,
• to local migrant farm workers (helping with community suppers, food redistribution, English conversation)

Application Details:

• must be between 18 & 30 years old and legally allowed to work in Canada (a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or have been granted refugee status),

• Term: 2 months with possibility of ongoing work
• Start Date: Early May or early July
• Eligibility: Must be between 18 & 30 years old.
• Pay: $22/hour, 35 hours/week
• Schedule: flexible Monday-Friday, occasional evening, or weekend

Assets:

• experience with community organizing and outreach to First Nations, farmers, landowners and the public,
• land use planning courses (Provincial and municipal land use policies, farmland protection, community engagement, waste reduction, inclusive rural community),
• knowledge of land use issues in Brant,
• WordPress, Canva, Mailchimp, Cakemail, GIS
• driver’s license, and

• Bonus: Spanish and ESL training/experience

Ability to commute or relocate before starting work (required).
