About Turtle Pond Wildlife Centre

Turtle Pond Wildlife Centre's (TPWC) mission is to provide professional wildlife rehabilitation to injured, ill and orphaned wildlife native to Northern Ontario. TPWC admits animals from members of the public and authorities who find wildlife in need. TPWC also offers assistance to people with wildlife situations, conflicts and general queries.

Turtle Pond Wildlife Centre is the sole authorized wildlife rehabilitation centre in Northern Ontario that admits a wide variety of birds, mammals and reptiles. From our base in Greater Sudbury, we care for animals from Thunder Bay, Timmins, Sault Ste. Marie, Manitoulin Island, North Bay and beyond. Over 900 wild animals were treated at Turtle Pond Wildlife Centre in 2023, resulting in many being successfully released back into their natural environment.

Location

The Intern will work onsite at 2882 Vern Drive, Val Caron, ON P3N1R3.

Responsibilities

Working under the supervision of the Manager and/or senior animal care, the Wildlife Health Technician Intern will:

• Become proficient in daily animal care procedures and protocols.
• Develop detailed animal care procedures/protocols for specific species and life stages.
• Assist with triage, stabilization and medical procedures such as wound management, physical examinations, parasite identification, medications, physio, and treating specific conditions such as emaciation and shock.
• Oversee, track and report on the health of intakes throughout the rehabilitation process.
• Assist the Manager of Animal Care with decisions and direction of care.

• Assist in training/supervising other staff in detailed procedures like wound management, laboratory tests, physio, and overall health assessment during the rehabilitation process.
• Provide daily care of wildlife under care, including feeding, cleaning, habitat set-ups and especially medical care as prescribed by senior animal care staff and veterinarians.
• Tasks also include general cleaning of the Centre.
• Develop leadership qualities while assisting new volunteers with daily duties and prioritizing tasks. Coordinates tasks, creates plans, makes decisions and assists in solving conflicts while working with volunteers and staff.
• Interact with clients and members of the public professionally and effectively while gathering pertinent animal admission histories and responding to queries both in person and through social media.

What We Offer

• Pay: $19.00/hour
• Schedule: 7.5h shift, 37.5 hours/week, may include weekends, holidays and shift work
• Contract: Full-time, fixed 52-week contract

Candidate Criteria

• Must be a new entrant into the workforce, are transitioning to a new career, or be unemployed or underemployed entering a new field.
• Must have not previously participated in an NOHFC funded internship in the 2020 Mandate.
• 18 years of age or older.
• Be legally eligible to work in Canada.
• Once hired, the candidate must reside in the Northern Ontario community in which they are employed.
• Have current tetanus vaccination
• Have rabies vaccinations or willingness to become inoculated against rabies
• Must be able to work in a physically demanding work environment, both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions
• Must have strong work ethic and able to work efficiently in an often fast paced, team oriented environment
• Excellent oral and written communication skills are required
• Computer skills (such as excel and Microsoft Word) and social media experience an asset
• Previous experience working with animals is preferred
• Educational background in animal biology, environmental conservation or health sciences is an asset
