Position: WATER RESOURCES TECHNICIAN (1 Position)
Type: age 30 & under / summer
Organization: Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority
Location: Oshawa, GTA / Durham Region, Ontario
Dates: April 27th, 2026 to August 28th, 2026 (18 Weeks)

SUMMARY:

The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority (CLOCA) is seeking a summer student for the position of Water Resources Technician. The Water Resources Technician will support Engineering Department projects by assisting with fieldwork and data entry related to streamflow measurements, water quality sampling, monitoring equipment installation and maintenance, surveying, and other duties as assigned.

Wage Rate per Hour: $18.80 per hour Hours per Week: 35

Main Duties Include:

Stream Baseflow Assessment - CLOCA has a long-term stream baseflow monitoring network. The main objective is to obtain baseflow measurements during the summer months and to monitor current stream conditions. At established measurement sites, the Technician will:

  • Measure stream velocity and depth using a flow meter for a range of flow events;
  • Calculate flow for each site using an Excel spreadsheet;
  • Populate CLOCA’s baseflow database.

Monitoring Station Maintenance – The Technician will assist the Environmental Engineering Technologist:

  • Repair, maintain, install monitoring stations and a variety of sensors;
  • Conduct detailed geodetic surveys including full stream geometry, overbank topography and elevations at gauging stations;
  • Conduct flow and water level measurements to develop rating curves by adding measured points and computing curves;
  • Establish water level indicators for gauge stations and associated flood damage centers.

Water Quality Sampling – Technician will assist the Hydrogeologist and Environmental Engineering Technician:

  • Prepare for routine sampling by ensuring sample bottles are available and labelled along with documentation;
  • Collect groundwater and surface water quality samples according to established sampling procedures;
  • Retrieve well water level data, and perform routine maintenance of CLOCA’s groundwater monitoring system;
  • Submit samples to labs.

Qualifications - The successful candidate should have the following:

  • University/college student with experience in water resources engineering or environmental resources or technology.
  • Valid Ontario G driver's license, in good standing.
  • Comfortable with field work i.e. inclement weather, working in and around water, bugs, climbing ladders, lifting, etc.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Good attention to detail; able to collect, enter and manage data accurately.
  • Good communication, teamwork and organizational skills.
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing the days tasks on short notice.
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access (ArcGIS software knowledge is an asset)
  • Comfortable using basic hand tools for minor building projects- drill, saw, screwdriver, wrenches, etc.
  • Student must provide and wear green patch safety boots. Other required safety equipment as prescribed in the Health & Safety Manual is provided by the employer.

The following are an asset , but not mandatory:

  • Land surveying experience
  • Experience with monitoring equipment operation
  • ArcMap or GIS experience
