Position: Waste Spot Checkers

Job Posting: Waste Spot Checkers in Calgary, AB

Tetra Tech Canada Inc. is seeking individuals who are excited about waste diversion! We are looking for Waste Spot Checkers to help educate residents by spot checking the recycling (blue) and the food and yard waste (green) carts for each house. Checkers will be looking for contamination in both carts and inputting the information in a tablet. An orientation session and health and safety training will be provided.

This is a short-term (temporary) hourly position requiring up to 24 hours of work per week from May 6 to August 30, 2024 for Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 6 am to noon (approximately). There is a potential of Monday shifts for meetings, administrative tasks, and preparation. These are tentative dates and minor adjustments may occur. Checkers will be paid $20.50/hr for the work, including training that will take place a week prior to the start date.

This position is on a shift basis depending on each individual’s schedule. Preference is given to staff available for more shifts, however special circumstances will be considered.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Visually checking the blue and green carts for contaminant.
  • Data entry and recording observations with a tablet.
  • Potential interaction with residents to inform them of current waste management procedures.

Qualifications:

  • An understanding of and interest in current environmental and waste management issues.
  • Be able to provide their own transportation to work sites in Calgary. Some sites may be accessible by public transit.
  • Own CSA Green Triangle certified steel-toed boots (minimum 6” ankle height) or be able to acquire them before your first day; other personal protective equipment will be provided (e.g., high-vis vest and safety glasses).
  • Working outside in varied weather conditions, with the ability to walk long distances and for long periods of time.
  • Be able to practice safe lifting techniques (up to a maximum of 10 kg) over the course of a workday.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and ability to interact with residents on a regular basis.
  • Ability to exercise flexibility, good judgment, discretion while following safe work practices.
  • Excellent attention to detail, and ability to work accurately and quickly to meet deadlines.
  • Be punctual and able to start work early in the morning (6:00 am).
  • Willingness to work in a team environment.

Optional Experience/Qualifications:

  • Alberta Class 5 driver’s license or equivalent.
  • Experience with waste composition studies and audits, environmental data collection and/or other types of solid waste management work.
