Position Summary

As frontline staff in a community-oriented bicycle shop, Recyclistas bicycle mechanics provide exceptional customer service. They share expertise and advice to match people with bicycles, new and used bicycle parts and accessories that suit their needs. Bicycle mechanics must have a high-level of mechanical skill as responsibilities include building and repairing used bicycles and assisting others to learn basic bicycle maintenance.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Assisting customers with getting the parts, service and support they need
  • Dealing with customer queries
  • Identifying faults, damage and wear
  • Repairing and/or replacing damaged or worn-out components
  • Fitting bikes and accessories (lights, pannier racks and/or fenders)
  • Carrying out routine services and safety checks
  • Advising customers regarding work which is required, and whether this is essential or recommended
  • Estimating costs (labour and parts) and providing customer quotes
  • Liaising with suppliers and dealers
  • Keeping the store organized, clean and looking good
  • Letting customers know about Recyclistas classes, services and events
  • Working in a teaching capacity with volunteers, class registrants and work-trade customers
  • Answering the phone, handling cash transactions and operating cash register.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • A minimum of one-year full-time (or equivalent) experience as a professional bike mechanic in a commercial bike shop, preferably 3-5 years of experience
  • Excellent people skills — flair for sales, customer service and teamwork
  • Great communication skills — you listen first, then share knowledge
  • Ability to work really well with customers and coworkers of all kinds
  • Flexibility to work a variety of shifts including some evening and weekends
  • Expertise in a wide range of commuter and road bicycle technologies
  • Bike fitting experience
  • Ability to build custom bicycles and wheels
  • Desire to lead educational workshops and classes
  • Must be a generally responsible and kind person who shows up on time, does good work and treats people well

Recyclistas offer a good wage and a respectful, collaborative environment.

Position is 25-40 hours/per week year round. Remuneration is hourly and is negotiated based on skills, efficiency and other skills the incumbent brings to the shop. $20-25/hr
