Position: Community Coordinator
Organization: Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary
Location: Victoria, BC

We acknowledge the lək ̓ʷəŋən-speaking Peoples (Songhees and Esquimalt/Kosapsum) on whose territory the Nature Sanctuary stands, and the lək ̓ʷəŋən-speaking and W̱SÁNEĆ Peoples including the W̱JOȽEȽP (Tsartlip), BOḰEĆEN (Pauquachin), SȾÁUTW̱ (Tsawout), W̱SIḴEM (Tseycum) and MÁLEXEȽ (Malahat) whose historical relationships with the land continue to this day.

We respect the vital relationships of First Peoples with these lands and waters for countless generations. We are honoured to receive Indigenous guidance and welcome collaboration in stewardship and appreciation of the Nature Sanctuary.

Join our team to advance local urban nature stewardship, restoration, learning and community impact!

As the ‘Community Coordinator’ at Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary you will be an essential part of our community engagement work. This position serves as the primary point person for organizing and overseeing events and communications, as well as helps to build and maintain relationships with Indigenous community partners, members, donors, visitors, and other stakeholders. Working within a matrix environment – that is, with collaborative leads for our differing initiatives, the Community Coordinator will ensure successful event delivery, through effective planning, balanced budgeting, and awareness about community. The Community Coordinator will also work with the Executive Director to raise our annual donor gift work and sponsorship campaigns. As with each member of our team, the Community Coordinator will further support the organization’s goals as outlined in our Strategic Plan, linked at the following URL.

This position is a good fit for you if you are interested in working in the non-profit, environmental, or community engagement sectors. You are well-organized, can follow directions to work independently, and are accountable for producing high-quality work to support the team. As this is a community-facing role, having a personable demeanour, using diplomacy and being attentive to detail are essential, along with the ability to multi-task, and manage the unexpected with a flexible and forward-thinking attitude. Key to this position are also strong project management skills and a can-do willingness to support events in all aspects - from welcoming esteemed guests, to helping to sweep up after the party is over. You are excellent in your ability to relay tasks and information to others, and able to take initiative and step in if any gaps or last-minute needs arise. To be successful in this role, you are efficient and cost-conscious when finding suppliers, sourcing materials, and allocating both your own and others' time.
