Position Summary

Island Outpost Staff are the primary on-site operational and guest-service team members for Island Outpost. This role serves as the first point of contact for visitors and is responsible for the smooth daily operation of the bike rental service and tuck shop, including retail sales, inventory management, basic bike readiness, and maintaining a clean, organized storefront.

Island Outpost Staff may work independently during slower periods or as part of a small team during peak demand, depending on scheduling and operational needs. As the season progresses, staff are expected to develop additional competencies and assume increased responsibility, including inventory oversight, merchandising standards, and light supervisory or administrative tasks.

Nature of Work

Daily operations typically begin with reviewing bookings, preparing rental bikes, opening the tuck shop, and ensuring the retail space is clean, stocked, and guest-ready. Throughout operating hours, Island Outpost Staff manage bike rentals and returns, retail transactions, customer inquiries, and point-of-sale systems.

Afternoon and closing responsibilities include restocking merchandise, folding and organizing apparel, cleaning the shop and rental areas, securing inventory, and completing end-of-day closing procedures. Staff may also assist with basic bike maintenance, shop organization projects, and seasonal setup or breakdown as required.

Key Responsibilities

• Act as a professional, welcoming representative of Island Outpost
• Manage bike rentals, returns, and customer inquiries

• Ensure rental bikes are clean, safe, and properly adjusted for guests
• Perform basic mechanical checks (e.g., tire pressure, seat height visual safety inspection)
• Operate point-of-sale (POS) systems for rentals and retail transactions
• Handle cash, card, and digital payments accurately and responsibly
• Stock shelves, receive deliveries, and take inventory as required
• Fold shirts and maintain organized, attractive retail displays
• Merchandise products according to company standards
• Maintain cleanliness and organization of the shop, rental area, and storage spaces
• Perform daily cleaning tasks including sweeping, tidying displays, and waste removal
• Answer basic questions about rentals, products, and the surrounding area
• Assist with opening and closing procedures
• Follow operational checklists, safety protocols, and company policies
• Support seasonal projects, shop setup, and breakdown as needed

Required Qualifications

• Previous retail or customer service experience
• Comfort working with bicycles and willingness to learn basic mechanical checks
• Ability to operate POS systems and handle transactions accurately
• Current First Aid and CPR‑C certification

Working Hours & Commitment

• Mandatory paid training period in Spring or early Summer prior to the operating season
• Strong weekend availability required
• Typical hours range from 10-20+ hours per week, depending on performance, availability, and seasonal demand
