Position: Shore Staff

Position Summary

Shore Staff are the primary on‑site operational and guest‑service team members for Toronto Island SUP. This role serves as the first point of contact for guests and instructors and is responsible for ensuring smooth daily operations, safe equipment use, and a welcoming, organized waterfront environment.

Shore Staff may work independently during slower periods or as part of a team of 3-6 staff members during peak demand, depending on scheduling and operational needs. As the season progresses, Shore Staff are expected to develop additional competencies and assume increased responsibility, including administrative, clerical, and supervisory tasks.

Nature of Work

Daily operations typically begin with reviewing schedules and bookings, monitoring communications, and preparing equipment and facilities for the day's activities.

Throughout operating hours, Shore Staff manage guest check‑in, waivers, payments, equipment allocation, and safety screening.

Afternoon and evening responsibilities include supporting scheduled programming, equipment storage, site cleanup, and securing the compound at the end of the day. Shore Staff may also assist with infrastructure projects, equipment maintenance, and repairs, where appropriate skills and aptitude exist.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as a professional and welcoming representative of Toronto Island SUP
  • Prepare, transport, and store SUP and kayak equipment
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the beach, compound, and waterfront areas
  • Process guest check-ins, waivers, and payments using booking and point-of-sale systems
  • Answer company phone and email inquiries as required
  • Schedule, organize, and manage guest flow and instructor support
  • Provide clear explanations and demonstrations of paddling techniques and safety procedures
  • Screen guests to ensure suitability for SUP and kayak rentals
  • Ensure guests understand company policies, terms, and conditions
  • Operate electric utility vehicles and small boats (where authorized)
  • Conduct on-water or shoreline patrols as assigned
  • Support and coordinate assistants and instructors during programming
  • Provide first aid or assist in rescue situations where required, where safe to do so, and where training and certification permit
  • Uphold brand standards, including guest engagement and social media awareness
  • Follow daily operational checklists and safety protocols
  • Assist with general equipment care, cleaning, and minor maintenance

Required Qualifications

  • Experience with stand‑up paddleboarding and/or kayaking (personal or professional)
  • Strong swimming ability and comfort in open‑water environments
  • Current First Aid and CPR‑C certification

Assets (not required):

  • National Lifeguard Service (NLS)
  • Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC)
  • Valid driver's licence

Working Hours & Commitment

  • Mandatory paid training period in Spring or early Summer prior to the operating season
  • Strong weekend availability required
  • Typical hours range from 10-20+ hours per week, depending on performance, availability, and seasonal demand
