Summer student: Forest Technician

About the position

The Forest Technician will support and implement forest-related projects across the Fundy Biosphere Region, contributing to the long-term stewardship of healthy, resilient ecosystems. Reporting to the Forests of the Future Program Manager, the technician will conduct fieldwork, collect and analyze ecological data, monitor forest health, and support the protection and management of key biodiversity areas.

Key responsibilities

  • Report directly to the Lead Forest Technician
  • Plant native tree species, including both softwood and hardwood
  • Monitor and maintain recently planted sites.
  • Conduct forest carbon inventories, and other types of forest inventories
  • Maintain maple sugar bush
  • Facilitate forest songbird surveys
  • Perform WESP assessments on a wide variety of wetlands
  • Contribute to other related projects within the biosphere’s mandate via other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Must be currently enrolled in a forestry or environmental-related post-secondary program
  • Self-motivated and highly organized with strong attention to detail
  • Ability to manage a flexible schedule
  • Willingness and ability to work outside in a variety of weather conditions
  • Proficient with Google Suite
  • Access to reliable transportation and class 5 license is required
  • Ability to identify common tree pathogens and pests would be considered an asset

Work term and rate

  • This is a 4 month Summer contract from May 4th-August 28th.
  • The work week is Monday-Friday 8:30am-4pm for 35h/week. Some evenings and weekends may be required
  • -Salary range from $18 to $22 per hour, depending on experience
  • Office is located at 103 Park Street, Moncton, NB with travel to field locations throughout the Fundy Biosphere Region
