Hiring: Farm Projects Assistant

Location: Tsawwassen/Delta, Metro Vancouver / Lower Mainland BC

Earthwise Society is a not-for-profit environmental education organization with demonstration projects for sustainable land use in Tsawwassen and Agassiz BC. We have an immediate opening at our Delta location located at 6400 3rd Avenue and 1900 56th Avenue in Tsawwassen. Reporting to the Operations Coordinator, the Farm Projects Assistant will be responsible for the following:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Carry out farming operations for an established one-acre organic teaching farm, including field preparation, field maintenance, irrigation, harvesting and post harvest handling of crops
• Assist with farm sales and marketing activities, including weekly Farm Carts and Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs
• Assist with maintenance of the Demonstration Food Garden as a community learning and teaching resource
• Assist with delivery of hands-on educational programs at the farm and food garden for children and youth
• Help maintain on-site composting as a component of organic soil management
• Ensure that public areas of the site are maintained as a destination learning resource to be clean, safe and inviting for visitors
• Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

• Enjoy physical activity and working outdoors
• Interest in gardening and growing food and one-year related experience
• Education in environmental sciences, horticulture, or related field
• Good customer service skills
• Good interpersonal and communication skills
• Valid BC Driver’s License
• Enjoyment of outdoor physical work

TERMS

This is a temporary part-time position approximately 15 – 18 hours/week, starting immediately and continuing until early November. Weekend work will be required. The pay rate is $19-20/ hr, depending on experience.
