Position: Digital Ecology Intern – Web & Digital Communications
Type: age 30 & under / summer
Organization: Waterloo Region Nature (Non-Profit Organization)
Location: Waterloo Region, Ontario

Placement Dates: May 2026 – August, 2026
Duration: 16 weeks (full-time)
Compensation: $20.00 hr / 32 hrs per week
Eligibility: Current post-secondary students enrolled in STEAM or Business programs

About Us

Waterloo Region Nature is a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering appreciation, understanding, and conservation of the natural environment across Waterloo Region and surrounding areas. Through education initiatives and conservation efforts, we connect communities with nature and promote sustainable practices.

Position Overview

We are seeking a motivated, tech-savvy Digital Ecology Intern to support our digital presence and communications. This role is ideal for a student eager to apply their technical and creative skills to conservation and environmental protection. You will play a key role in modernizing our online platforms and enhancing how we educate and engage with our members.

Key Responsibilities

Support the updating, modernization, and redesign of our EcoPosts website by::

  • Collecting information on local trails and naturalist locations through fieldwork to provide updated data, enhance usability and visual appeal
  • Develop and maintain web pages featuring trail descriptions, ecological features, and species information while ensuring content is accurate, accessible, and aligned with best practices in environmental communication
  • Integrate mapping tools (e.g., GIS-based web maps) to display trail networks and environmental features
  • Assist in managing and improving website content, ensuring accuracy and accessibility
  • Identify opportunities to improve user experience and digital engagement

Qualifications

  • Current enrollment in a post-secondary STEAM or Business program
  • Strong digital skills, familiarity with front-end development (HTML, CSS)
  • Experience working with website platforms, specifically WordPress, is considered an asset
  • Familiarity with GIS tools and web mapping (e.g., ArcGIS Online, QGIS) is an asset
  • Interest in environmental conservation and community engagement
  • Strong organizational and data management skills
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently
