2 positions: Farm Youth Worker
Type: age 30 & under / summer
Organization: Fraser Farming Association
Position Location: Whonnock Lake area, Maple Ridge, BC

If you love the outdoors and want to work on a farm growing food, building fences, animal structures, raised garden beds then this might be the position for you.

  • Dates: Seasonal Position, July to August; some flexibility in dates is possible
  • Hours: Full-time, Average 32.5 hrs/week.
  • Schedule: Hours are typically M-F
  • Compensation: $20/hr
  • Note: Two positions available - they are dependent on funding, which may change the number of hours or length of position.

Responsibilities

Under the Supervision of the Farm Manager, the Farm Youth Worker will

  • Prepare farm beds, plant (direct seed and transplant), tend, harvest, and prepare a variety of crops including vegetables and herbs
  • Grow crops using organic farming techniques
  • Safely use and maintain farming tools, including hand tools, gas-powered tools, seeders, weeders, fence post pounders, etc.
  • Help plant and maintain berries, fruit trees
  • Remove invasive species
  • Keep field records

Qualifications

  • 3 months experience in gardening, farming preferred
  • Willingness to learn new skills and techniques
  • Enjoy working independently as well as in collaboration with a team
  • Able to give and receive feedback
  • Adaptable and flexible
  • Able to meet goals within a limited time frame (harvesting, weeding, etc.)
  • Initiative to solve problems, while knowing when to ask for information or help
  • Able to carry out a variety of physical tasks that involve bending, squatting, lifting up to 50 lb, and repetitive motion
  • Equipped, willing, and able to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Type 5 Driver’s License preferred
  • Must meet Canada Summer Jobs Requirements

In order for us to be able to hire you under the Canada Summer Jobs Grant, you’ll need to:

  • be between the ages of 15 and 30 at the start of employment,
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or to whom refugee protection has been conferred, and
  • be legally entitled to work in Canada.
