Cambium is looking for a Senior Ecologist / Project Manager to join the Natural Sciences group and provide support on a variety of projects related to environmental impact assessment, environmental permitting and approvals, natural area protection, species recovery, and ecological restoration. Our Natural Sciences group works with a variety of public and private clients on a wide range of projects. The successful candidate will have in‐depth training and experience as a Biologist or Ecologist and Project Manager in the environmental consulting industry. They will be expected to manage project resources, budgets, and schedules; supervise and direct technical staff; prepare proposals; contribute to business development; and act as a trusted advisor to new and existing clients.

JOB DUTIES

  • Managing and providing technical direction on natural sciences projects.
  • Collaborating with other technical staff and industry professionals as part of multi-disciplinary project teams.
  • Contributing to deliverables that characterize the natural environment and provide an assessment of development-related impacts, at various scales.
  • Completing literature reviews, natural feature mapping, technical writing, and data analyses.
  • Project planning, budgeting, scheduling, and allocation of personnel and resources.
  • Liaising with regulatory agencies and securing environmental permits and approvals.
  • Leading the preparation of proposals and grant applications for prospective work.
  • Managing clients and contributing to business development activities.
  • Adhering to health and safety protocols for self and support staff.
  • Providing mentorship and training to junior personnel.
  • Working to meet internal and external deadlines, which may require occasional evening and weekend work.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum 8 years of employment experience, preferably in the engineering consulting industry.
  • B.Sc. or BES (minimum) in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or a similar discipline.
  • Advanced knowledge of terrestrial, aquatic, and wetland flora and fauna native to Central Ontario.
  • Direct experience carrying out field surveys and inventories of the natural environment using standard protocols and classification systems.
  • Experience working collaboratively with engineering, planning, and project management professionals.
  • Experience managing and providing technical leadership on environmental impact studies, environmental assessments, species at risk screenings, environmental management plans, and other similar natural sciences projects.
  • Knowledge of and experience demonstrating conformity with provincial and municipal natural heritage policies.
  • Experience securing permits and approvals under the Endangered Species Act, 2007, Species at Risk Act, Conservation Authorities Act, and Fisheries Act.
  • Proven data compilation, data analysis, mapping, and technical writing skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication skills with fluency (reading, writing, and oral) in English.
  • Valid Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle.

ADDITIONAL ASSETS

  • Provincially recognized training/certification in the Ecological Land Classification (ELC) System or Ontario Wetland Evaluation System (OWES).
  • Project Management Certification or Training
  • Experience working on large-scale land development, infrastructure, and/or ecological monitoring projects.
  • Additional training/certification relating to ecological protocols or environmental monitoring (i.e., Arborist/ISA, Butternut Health Assessor, Class 2 Backpack Electrofishing, OBBN, OSAP, Can-CISEC, etc.)
