Position: Handyperson, Renovation Assistant, Community Outreach
Organization: Langford Conservancy (Lconserv.ca)
Eligibility: Canadian citizen, permanent resident or refugee, 18 to 30 years old only

Location: Brant County, between Hamilton and Brantford, Ontario
Housing Optional rental (furnished suite). We may be able to help you with reduced rental costs, relocating and/or travel.

Term: 6-8 months

Are you interested in helping us to care for the Langford Schoolhouse and the grounds?

Do you have any experience with caring for an older building (repairs to the foundation, waterproofing, repairing brickwork, painting, cement work, installing siding?)

Are you interested in food rescue and redistribution of this food to the community?

Would you like to help our organization to foster an inclusive rural community through workshops and outreach? 

Have you taken any courses in museum studies or worked for a museum? 

 

We are a small, not for profit organization that owns the Langford Schoolhouse as an accessible rural community hub, with a certified kitchen. We are dedicated to preserving natural and cultural heritage and to protecting farmland. 

Job Description:

You would be involved in helping with the following:

  • renovations to the Schoolhouse (e.g. cement work, siding, foundation work, painting)
  • care and maintenance of the grounds,
  • food rescue and redistribution, 
  • outreach to newcomers (migrant farm workers, Palestinians), Six Nations and seniors
  • workshops related to conservation, farmland protection and rural history,
  • eco-tourism (birding, plant and conservation walks, eco-farmstay),
  • administrative work (social media, helping with our application to qualify as a museum). 

We are seeking someone who is highly motivated, and a team player. We will provide mentoring and work with you.

  • Term: 6-8 months
  • Eligibility: Must be between 18 & 30 years old.
  • Pay: $22/hour, 30-35 hours/week
  • Benefits: rescued organic fruit and vegetables, 4% vacation pay
  • Schedule: flexible 6-7 hour day shift, 4-5 days per week, occasional Saturday
  • Assets: comfortable using a variety of tools and a tractor; driver’s license; experience caring for an older building, renovation (carpentry, cement/foundation, painting, siding), Spanish and/or Palestinian Arabic, experience with eco-tourism 
  • Ability to commute or relocate before starting work (required).
