Regenerative Farming / Agriculture

Position: Regenerative Farm Apprentice
Farm: Maude Island Farm

Location: Maude Island, near Daajing Giids, Haida Gwaii, BC
Accom: We offer accommodation at the farm and shared meals. There is a rustic cabin or a room in the large farmhouse for the apprentice.

Unique Regenerative Farm Apprenticeship Opportunity

Maude Island Farm on Haida Gwaii is looking for a mature 25-30 year old applicant for a 5 month seasonal apprenticeship position from May 1 - September 30.

Who We Are

We are an organic vegetable farm using regenerative practices on Haida Gwaii.

We have been growing local food for 32 years, selling produce at the Daajing Giids Farmer’s Market, local restaurants and stores, and doing weekly CSA deliveries. Maude Island Farm is located on remote Maude Island with a population of 3 (that’s us). The farm is boat access only so the remoteness is exacerbated by the limited travel options. We go to town weekly for the Saturday Farmers Market.

The farm is off-grid which means that many urban conveniences such as daily hot showers, dependable internet and doing laundry can be a bit challenging.

Laird and Lynda (farmers) are typical aging farmers 65 and 69, but we still have energy and passion for the farm and growing local food. We also see the importance of teaching the next generation the skills of food production.

What We Offer

We offer accommodation at the farm and shared meals. There is a rustic cabin or a room in the large farmhouse for the apprentice.

The apprentice will work closely with the farmer in all aspects of farming from starting plants to planting crops, weeding, fertilization, compost building, harvesting, prepping veggies for market, selling at the Farmers market etc. Also greenhouse management will taught. Many non-related garden tasks come with farm-life like chopping firewood and preserving veggies or salmon in season.

We are located on the south shore of a beautiful island and have kayaks and a rowboat for those who love to be on the water. The swimming is great if you like cold water, so don’t worry, we do have some leisure time and encourage people to explore and enjoy this little piece of paradise.

Apprentice Requirements

We are seeking a youth between 25-30 years who has a work history and experience in farming or market gardening. The individual must want to be an apprentice in order to further a long-term goal of farming or market gardening. The aim of the apprenticeship is to help prepare tomorrow’s food producers to farm.

The individual must be comfortable being alone in a remote environment without a need for a lot of social stimulation or good internet. We are looking for a self-motivated individual who can work by themselves and initiate and complete tasks independently, although most work will be done with the farmer and often there will be volunteers to help with the workload so being able to work with a team is also an asset.

Off-grid life can be physically demanding and uncomfortable at times, we are looking for a hardy soul who is up for the challenge.

Applicant must be strong and healthy as farming is hard work, must be capable of keeping up with a 65 year old (haha). Must also be flexible with dietary requirements.

We would like 1-2 recent work references. University degree not necessarily an asset. Pay will be more than fair and commensurate with relevant experience.
