Position: Engagement and Events Officer
Organization: Columbia Institute
Location: Metro Vancouver area, BC / Hybrid
Salary: $70,747.20 with benefits
Anticipated start date: December 2, 2024

The Centre for Civic Governance, formerly the Columbia Institute, is hiring a full-time Engagement and Events Officer. This is a hybrid and full-time position (37.5-hours a week, plus occasional evening and weekend work as required).

This is a one-year term position with the possibility of extension. To be eligible for this role, candidates need to be based in the Lower Mainland of B.C., and available to travel within the Metro Vancouver area for meetings and events. The position will report to the Management Team.

Role

This position will be responsible for coordinating our two major program initiatives: GreenJobs BC and our civic governance events, including our annual High Ground civic governance forum.

GreenJobs BC

GreenJobs BC seeks to strengthen communication, cooperation, and efforts between labour, environmental organizations, and Indigenous communities, to advance economic and environmental initiatives that provide good green jobs; are socially equitable; are ecologically responsible; and, result in the reduction of GHG emissions.

Civic Governance Events

Organize and oversee our civic governance events, particularly our annual hallmark civic governance conference. Now in its 20th edition, this spring event inspires, informs, and connects progressive electeds (mayors, councilors, regional directors, and school trustees) from B.C. and across Canada, alongside union leaders and civil society experts alongside union leaders and civil society experts, around inspiring policies and practices, informed research, and transformative actions. Other civic governance events include our annual webinar conversation series for local electeds and our networking reception and dialogue during UBCM.

Key Responsibilities

  • GreenJobsBC initiative:
    • Support development and execution of strategic and operational plans ;
    • Prepare and manage operational budgets;
    • Coordinate in-person and virtual convening opportunities (e.g., meetings and events);
    • Build relations with local electeds, labour leaders, environmental organizations, and Indigenous communities;
    • Convene virtual and in-person meetings with key stakeholders;
    • Prepare reports and briefs;
    • Support the cultivation of new financial support for GreenJobs BC.
    • Conduct and/or facilitate research on green jobs, green economy, decarbonization, etc.
    • Create summary guides for local and provincial governments on policy and procurement.
    • Organize education and training sessions for key stakeholders.
  • Civic Governance Events
    • Organize and coordinate civic governance in-person and virtual events, including High Ground, webinar series, and events during UBCM – from planning to implementation and evaluation;
    • Represent Centre for Civic Governance in-person at meetings, conferences, and other networking and learning events in the Metro Vancouver area;
    • Organize and coordinate key CCG events:
    • Support program development;
    • Liaise with speakers on event information, registration, accommodation, etc.
    • Support organization of youth delegation participation in events;
    • Recruit and oversee volunteers and develop volunteer plan for events;
    • Coordinate catering, AV, and digital needs for events;
    • Coordinate outreach to potential event participants;
    • Support communications and social media presence;
    • and, be present during all related events;
  • Other ad hoc tasks related to events and engagement.

Preferred Qualifications

The successful candidate will have most of the following qualities and experience:

  • At least three years work experience in a relevant position.
  • Prior experience in program/event coordination.
  • Prior experience working with environment organizations, labour, and/or Indigenous communities.
  • Strong program management skills, including ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Excellent research, writing and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with little oversight.
