Job Opportunity

Position: Program Coordinator(s)
Organization: Kickstand Community Bikes
Location: Vancouver, BC

Kickstand is a non-profit, volunteer-run community cycling resource centre dedicated to using the bicycle as a tool for empowering individuals, enriching communities, promoting neighbourhood cohesion, sustaining the environment, and having fun. We are located on the traditional, unceded and occupied territories of the Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), xwməθkwəy̓ əm (Musqueam) Nations and Səlílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh), in the area colonially known as East Vancouver. We are actively working to understand our role in colonization and how we as an organization can be respectful guests on this land.

Kickstand provides programming for a diverse cycling community by facilitating a welcoming public-access bicycle workshop space where we provide bicycle repair support along with refurbished used bikes and parts. We strive to provide a safer space for community members to learn about bike mechanics and work on their own bicycles. We are looking for one or two enthusiastic and organized individual(s) interested in supporting us in serving our vibrant and growing community. These individual(s) will continue developing our resources, organizational development and improving our services.

Kickstand actively seeks staff who reflect the diverse community we serve. Individuals typically underrepresented in the bicycle mechanics industry are encouraged to apply; queer, trans people, people of colour, Indigenous people, women, people living with disabilities, and/or mental health variations and/or addiction. A commitment to sobriety during operational hours is required.

Compensation: $26.00-30.00 hourly (depending on experience), stipend for extended health benefits

Hours: 15-25 hours per week if sharing the role/ 25-35 hours per week if one individual is hired

Start date: early to mid October 2025

Duration of contract: 1 year (with possibility of extension or ongoing employment)

Roles and Responsibilities

The Coordinator(s) will report to the volunteer committee and work jointly with committee members and volunteers to complete the following tasks:

Volunteer Coordination

  • Schedule volunteer shifts
  • Manage volunteer intake
  • Facilitate volunteer orientations or support volunteers in doing so
  • Assist with coordinating workshops and training for volunteers
  • Support volunteers and Committee as needed
  • Facilitate and support volunteer led initiatives on an ongoing basis
  • Support with community-building activities among volunteers (e.g. social events, trainings)

Organizational & Community Development

  • Support Kickstand in sustainable growth that aligns with our vision and values
  • Build and maintain partnerships with other organizations in the community
  • Help organize governance and visioning session to help steer future direction of Kickstand
  • Work with volunteers to further navigate organization government under a consensus-based decision making framework
  • Assist in development of other administrative documents (e.g. training manuals, constitution, conflict resolution protocols)
  • Develop ways to improve shift attendance by volunteers
  • Maintain and organize institutional memory (i.e. records of minutes, procedures, etc.)
  • Develop initiates to increase involvement of individuals under-represented in the cycling industry
  • Collaborate with the Vancouver Community Bike Shop Network
  • Build partnerships with other organizations that could benefit from Kickstand’s services
  • Work with volunteers to achieve the organization’s development strategy

Communications

  • Maintain & improve efficiency of communication channels (Slack, email, social media, website)
  • Improve signage, displays and promotional material
  • Develop and maintain ongoing relationships with building manager and neighbouring organizations within the Mergatroid Building
  • Increase visibility of space and programming 

Shop Management

  • Organize work parties for shop organization and improvement
  • Support with inventory management
  • Organize bike building parties and events
  • Support with recycling and other shop maintenance tasks as needed
  • Develop and maintain Kickstand’s operational policies and protocols

Finances

  • Write grants to support on-going expenses and new programming
  • Complete grant reports for on-going projects
  • Organize fundraising activities
  • Work with Accountant and Treasurer to develop and maintain external and internal bookkeeping and budgeting systems
  • Ensure that deposits are completed and petty cash is replenished on a bi-weekly basis

Desired Qualifications

  • Highly organized, flexible, good at taking personal initiative and strong interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to community development and education
  • Experience working with a diverse group of people
  • Direct and tactful communication skills
  • Experience coordinating volunteers
  • Experience in a leadership/management role
  • Ability to work with limited oversight and help define group goals
  • A strong understanding and commitment to anti-oppressive values
  • Familiarity with Consensus-based Decision Making
  • Experience or familiarity with bike mechanics and maintenance is helpful, but not required
  • Experience with Wordpress web management system, social media, creating promotional materials, grant writing
  • Workshop facilitation and event coordination are assets
  • Long-term interest in participating in the Kickstand community and previous experience volunteering and/or working in a community bike shop is huge asset
  • Some experience in grant writing, shop management, events and workshops
