Position: Assistant Recreation Programmer
Employer: Strathcona County
Location: Ardrossan, near Edmonton, Alberta

This posting is for 1 permanent part-time position

Are you passionate about outdoor recreation, community connection, and creating memorable experiences? The Assistant Recreation Programmer plays a key role in bringing outdoor education programs, day camps, and community events to life at the Strathcona Wilderness Centre.

In this dynamic role, you’ll coordinate engaging programs and events, support and mentor instructors and volunteers, and help ensure our programs, spaces, and equipment are delivered to the highest standard. You’ll work closely with internal teams and community partners while contributing ideas that shape future outdoor recreation programming.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate outdoor education programs, day camps, and community events in collaboration with community organizations, agencies, and partners
  • Schedule and support program staff, volunteers, and facilities to ensure smooth delivery of programs and events
  • Provide day-to-day supervision, coaching, and mentorship to program staff and volunteers
  • Support the development and delivery of training, processes, and internal procedures alongside the Recreation Programmer
  • Oversee program spaces and equipment, working closely with site operations, facilities, and parks teams
  • Contribute as a collaborative member of the Recreation Programming Team, assisting with leadership, supervision, and guest service problem-solving
  • Support recruitment, staff development, special projects, and other initiatives led by the Outdoor Recreation Programmer
  • Actively engage with program participants and facility guests, delivering welcoming and exceptional customer service
  • Assist with surveys, feedback collection, orientation initiatives, and strategies that support guest satisfaction and retention

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Minimum high school education with 4 years of related experience
  • In the process of obtaining, or have completed post-secondary education in physical education, recreation, tourism, or a related field, or a combination of education and experience is considered an asset
  • Minimum of two years program coordination experience, along with recreation-related supervisory/leadership experience, including staff supervision, to ensure effective team management and a positive work environment
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and team-building skills, with proven ability to maintain high standards of safety, & quality
  • Strong team player with the ability to collaborate effectively in a dynamic work environment
  • Ability to work independently, and on a variety of teams in a variety of environments
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills taking a balanced approach that supports team dynamics and business priorities
  • Demonstrate subject matter expertise in programming related to outdoor skills, adventure education, and/or environmental education
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and scheduling software, and knowledge of safe work practices
  • The following certifications are an asset to the position:
    • Wilderness First Aid Certification
    • Cross Country Ski Instructor Certification (CANSI) and NCCP Community Coaching (cross country skiing)
    • Paddle Canada Lake Instructor/Waterfront Instructor

Conditions of Employment:

  • Current Intermediate First Aid/CPR & WHIMIS
  • Submission of a Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Valid Alberta Class 4 Driver’s licence and submission of a 5-year Driver’s Abstract with less than 7 demerits
