Hiring: Kayak Lead & Mountain Biking Lead
Organization: Don't Mess with the Don
Location: Toronto, Ontario

This is a meaningful role where you can make a difference working for an organization that cleans up and restores Toronto’s largest greenspace: the Don Valley. Don’t Mess with the Don (DMWTD) is a registered charity that works to clean up, restore and protect Toronto’s Don Valley, by harnessing the power and enthusiasm of citizen volunteers. We organize various events and activities including garbage clean ups, nature stewardship and a nature-themed arts and crafts program.

We are looking to hire a Kayak Lead & Mountain Biking Lead to help us with the planning, communication, and administration of our Kayak (Paddle & Protect) and Mountain Biking programs.

Hours:

  • 25 hours/week, in-person (flexible schedule), including:
    • 4 hours Saturday mornings (9 a.m. – 1 p.m.)
    • 5 hours Sunday mornings (9 a.m. – 2 p.m.)

Time Frame: Late May to late October - Starts May 23, 2026

Remuneration: $23 per hour

Locations:

  • Kayaking: Lake Ontario, launching variously from Cherry Beach, Biidaasige Park, and the Toronto Islands
  • Mountain Biking: Don Valley Trails, starting and ending behind the Old Science Centre near Don Mills and Eglinton Ave.

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced and confident outdoor leader to deliver two recreational programs:

Kayak Lead — coordinate and guide recreational kayaking programs for youth and adults along Toronto's waterfront. This role involves leading group excursions, providing instruction in kayak skills and water safety, and mentoring volunteer assistants.

Mountain Biking Lead — help organize, lead, and instruct groups of amateur mountain bikers on the trails of the Don Valley. The successful candidate will deliver safe, educational, and memorable riding experiences while fostering a welcoming environment for participants of all skill levels.

Both roles combine outdoor leadership, safety management, customer service, and a passion for outdoor education. The ideal candidate is a strong communicator with sound judgment in the field and on the water.

Key Kayak Responsibilities

  • Lead guided kayak tours to destinations including Tommy Thompson Park, the Toronto Islands, and the Portlands / Mouth of the Don that focus on litter cleanups of the water and shoreline.
  • Instruct participants (ages 10 and up) in water safety, PFD use, paddling techniques, and kayak operation
  • Train and mentor kayak volunteer assistants
  • Oversee set-up, take-down, and maintenance of all kayaking equipment
  • Monitor weather and water conditions to ensure safe operations
  • Communicate online with participants and assistants regarding bookings, schedule changes, and safety/weather updates

Key Mountain Biking Responsibilities

  • Lead mountain biking trips alongside skilled volunteers
  • Instruct participants in trail riding basics, safety, and etiquette
  • Train and mentor mountain biking volunteer assistants
  • Oversee set-up, take-down, and maintenance of all mountain bikes and related gear
  • Monitor weather and trail conditions to ensure safe operations
  • Communicate online with participants and assistants regarding bookings, schedule changes, and safety/weather updates

Qualifications — Kayaking

  • Valid First Aid & CPR certification (current)
  • Experience leading group kayak outings (preferably with sit-on-top kayaks)
  • Strong knowledge of kayaking best practices, safety protocols, and risk management
  • Familiarity with the Toronto waterfront and its weather, currents, and boat traffic
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills
  • Additional certifications (e.g., Paddle Canada, ORCKA, LSS, or equivalent) an asset
  • Experience working with youth and diverse groups an asset

Qualifications — Mountain Biking

  • Valid First Aid & CPR certification (current)
  • Moderate mountain biking skills and trail riding experience
  • Familiarity with the Don Valley trail system
  • Basic bike maintenance skills (tire changes, brake/gear adjustments) an asset
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills
  • Experience working with youth and diverse groups an asset
