Hiring: Nature educator

Champlain Heights Community Association (CHCA) is seeking a skilled nature education programmer who enjoys working with children in an outdoor learning environment.
This position will work on curriculum development and program delivery for the fall, as well as a possible extension leading into the spring. Our program will run for children ranging pre-school to grade 7 in a forest environment in Everett Crowley Park, and will engage with the CHCA preschool and educational displays in the centre.
Overview of Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver engaging educational classes and outdoor nature-based, place-based activities for children and youth
- Demonstrate strong social-emotional skills while working outdoors with groups; collaborate confidently with other facilitators and the CHCA Board of Directors
- Encourage affirmations of children’s experiences, interests, and ways of being
- Demonstrate passion about some or all of the following: plants, wildlife, ecology, Everett Crowley Park
- Perform other duties as needed for the successful execution of nature education under CHCA
Target qualifications and core competencies:
- 3+ years education or experience in children’s environmental education, outdoor education, or related fields, including curriculum development
- Can demonstrate strong naturalist or ecological knowledge and/or Indigenous land-based knowledge
- Experience and comfort facilitating learning experiences for people of all ages. Experience working with children ranging from pre school to grade 7, ideally in multi-aged, neurodiverse groups
- Experience working with individuals of different ages, cultures, backgrounds, and abilities.
- Respond to the participants with care and creativity, supporting learning and developmental expectations.
- Excellent communication skills. Speak, listen, and write in a clear and respectful manner using age-appropriate communication tools and techniques.
- Current Standard First Aid & CPR C training (or willingness to obtain pre-start).
- Complete a successful police reference check if not already obtained with Vancouver Park Board
You might have the following assets:
- Strong knowledge of Everett Crowley Park and/or lived experience in Everett Crowley Park (preferred)
- Knowledge of the Champlain Heights Community Association, the Everett Crowley Park Committee, and/or Champlain Heights community
- Bachelor's Degree or higher education in science, ecology, or related fields
- Experience with nature connection practices and place-based learning
- ECE (Early Childhood Educator) Qualification
Duties & Working Conditions
- This is a part-time job with a wage of $30 per hour. 60 hours of time has been budgeted for curriculum development, from September 22nd to October 10th, which will include meetings with staff and the CHCA, with the remainder to be WFH. Approximately 4 hours a day Monday to Friday starting October the 14th to the 31st will be spent delivering educational programming at the Champlain Community Centre and Everett Crowley Park. Any time not spent delivering programming will be used to create educational displays for the Community or as directed by the CHCA.
- Two sets of curriculum will be developed for 5 cohorts, pre school, grade K-1, 2-3, 4-5, 6-7. Each cohort should have a theme, with one set of curriculum for the fall and one for spring.
- Additional work for program delivery may be available in the spring.
- Working conditions:
- Working on site in the Champlain Heights community 100% of the time for in-person programming.
- The capacity to attend in person meetings to plan curriculum development and an appropriate WFH environment to develop curriculum.
- Working with a variety of people, primarily children.
- Working outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather conditions.
- Available Monday to Friday
- Standing for extended periods of time.
- Other related nature education tasks for the CHCA may be assigned as seen fit
- This role is supervised by the Champlain Heights Community Association Board of Directors, and will deliver programs safely according to CHCA’s policies
- Anticipated start date is Monday 22nd September
