Hiring: Seasonal Gardener
Organization: Riverdale Hub
Location: Toronto ON (Greenwood & Gerrard)

The Riverdale Hub in the east end of Toronto houses the Free Spirit @Riverdale Hub restaurant, Riverdale Hub Gallery, unique Event and Workspaces, Community Gardens and Work-based Training Programs. Our innovative space has been developed to inspire social entrepreneurship, drive innovation and build community capacity.

Position Summary:

The Organic Gardener not only shares our values, but is creative, versatile, and passionate about sustainability, organic gardening, food security and community. The position will require the individual to tend to the rooftop organic vegetable garden, rain garden, and indoor plants. The gardener may have to be available on weekends to sell surplus produce at the Artisan Market and local farmers market. Other activities include the facilitation of gardening workshops for the general public as well as organizing events, including Seed and Plant Swap, and the Rooftop Garden Tour.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Create and execute on seasonal garden plans and activities;
  • Maintain the rooftop, rainwater, and patio gardens;
  • Maintain indoor plants;
  • Implement a composting program in collaboration with cafe staff;
  • Source, stock and maintain inventory of all garden supplies and inputs;
  • Provide direction to community garden volunteers and students;
  • Provide content for a monthly newsletter on garden activities;
  • Prepare a monthly report and end of season report as well as keep a gardening log of issues and activities;
  • Develop content and facilitate gardening workshops for the general public;
  • Coordinate events, including Seedy Sunday, Plant Swap, and Rooftop Garden Tours;
  • Arrange for the sale of surplus garden produce at a local farmer’s market as as well as the Sunday artisan markets;
  • Organize a volunteer appreciation luncheon;
  • Assist in marketing and social media activities and events to promote the garden;
  • Ensure tidiness and organization of greenhouse and all materials;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of organic, urban, and community gardening experience.
  • Expertise in permaculture preferred.
  • Horticulture or sustainable urban agriculture certificate or diploma.
  • Motivation to follow through on projects and bring forward new ideas to advance the garden.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team, as well as independently.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Social media skills are an asset.
  • Strong computer (MS Office and G-Suite) skills.

30 hours per week, $25.00 per hour
