Trees, biodiversity, climate action

Position: Executive Director
Organization: Forêt Capitale Forest
Location: Hybrid — remote, with occasional field work in Ottawa, ON and Gatineau, QC

  • Reports To: Board of Directors
  • Position Type: Contract, part-time, 25 hours/week
  • Salary: $45–$55 per hour, depending on experience
  • Start Date: September 7, 2026

Forêt Capitale Forest (FCF) is seeking an Executive Director who will champion and advance its mission to mitigate the effects of climate change by planting forests and raising awareness of the importance of trees and biodiversity.

Our Vision: By 2030, we will create an additional 1,000 hectares of tree cover in the National Capital Region (Ottawa–Outaouais), helping to mitigate climate change and conserve biodiversity.

As a charitable non-profit organization, we engage the local community to plant trees, link ecosystems, and steward resilient urban forests through private and public landowner collaboration.

Key Responsibilities

ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP

  • Lead the development, monitoring, and implementation of FCF’s strategic plan.
  • Foster an inclusive, collaborative, and innovative organizational culture while supporting, coaching, and developing staff.
  • Advise and communicate with the Board on organizational performance, opportunities, risks, strategic priorities, and recommended actions.
  • Guide the organization through growth and change.

FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILITY & FUNDRAISING

  • Oversee FCF’s financial health, including budgeting, forecasting, and long-term sustainability.
  • Support the Treasurer in monitoring organizational financial performance.
  • Lead and diversify fundraising efforts and events, including major gifts, donor stewardship, campaigns, grants, and other revenue-generating initiatives.
  • Lead or support revenue generation strategies beyond grant writing, including campaigns, major gifts, and innovative funding approaches.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with donors and funders to ensure long-term engagement and support.

RELATIONSHIP & PARTNERSHIP BUILDING

  • Manage FCF’s staff and provide support to all contributors, including volunteers, involved in FCF’s work.
  • Collaborate with organizations working to mitigate the impact of climate change and enhance biodiversity, to advance FCF’s mission.
  • Strengthen partnerships with non-profit organizations and community agencies in the Greater Ottawa-Gatineau area that deliver programs and services.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with community partners, priority client populations, local governments, media, and the public.

HUMAN RESOURCES

  • Determine annual staffing requirements for operations and program delivery.
  • Oversee the implementation of human resources policies, procedures, and practices, including the development of job descriptions for all staff.
  • Follow the established performance management process for all staff.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years in non-profit or charity leadership and management.
  • Ability to work in English and French.
  • Experience managing and motivating staff in a supervisory role.
  • Strong knowledge of charity regulations, compliance, risk management, and Canadian and Ontario charity policies and financial requirements.
  • Skilled and experienced in financial oversight, including budgeting, forecasting, and management.
  • Demonstrated success in donor relations, grant writing, campaigns, major gifts, and other revenue generation strategies.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement annual and multi-year strategic plans.
  • Excellent relationship-building, communication, and public speaking skills.
  • Ability to prioritize, manage multiple high-priority projects, and work independently or collaboratively.
  • Adept at guiding organizations through uncertainty and periods of transformation.

Asset Qualifications

  • A post-secondary degree or diploma in a relevant field (environmental studies, public administration, business, or non-profit management).
  • Verbal and written proficiency in both English and French.
  • Knowledge of urban forestry, ecology, or environmental programming.
  • Knowledge of the region’s funding and policy landscapes.
  • Experience working in a hybrid work environment.
  • Comfortable with social and traditional media outreach.
  • Experience reporting to a Board of Directors and supporting governance.
