Conservation Internships

Thames Talbot Land Trust (TTLT) is seeking a passionate Conservation Intern to join our team and support our mission of protecting and stewarding land and nurturing peoples’ relationships with land and nature. Position Title: Conservation Intern
Reports to: Conservation Director
Organization: Thames Talbot Land Trust

  • Location: London, Ontario, with travel to field sites up to 1 hour from London
  • Hours of work: 37.5 hours per week, typically worked between Monday-Friday, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm, with some evening and weekend work as needed
  • Term: Full-time, 10-month contract
  • Start Date: May 11th, 2026 (negotiable)
  • Compensation: $22.00/hr

Thames Talbot Land Trust (TTLT) is an environmental charity with a mission to protect, restore, and nurture nature within Elgin, Middlesex, Oxford and Perth counties and the City of London. Established in 2000, TTLT has built a dedicated network of staff, volunteers, and community partners who work together to conserve important natural and agricultural lands and inspire a connection to nature at the local level.

TTLT permanently protects more than 2,600 acres of land across 32 sites (and counting), which are home to more than 100 species at risk. As one of the first land trusts to receive the Conservation Excellence Award from the Centre for Land Conservation, we are committed to striving towards a greener future for all living beings.

Position Summary:

The Conservation Intern will join TTLT’s stewardship team to mitigate threats to biodiversity as well as enhance ecological integrity on more than 2,600 acres of land within TTLT’s focal area in Southwestern Ontario. This position involves work in both an office environment and outside in nature. Candidates must be comfortable working off trail and in any weather conditions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assisting with annual monitoring of nature reserves
  • Assisting with inventory, surveys, and data management of natural features and species at risk
  • Creating and/or maintaining hiking trails and performing structural maintenance such as installing signage, repairing fences, etc.
  • Performing invasive species mapping and management on nature reserves (methods include hand pulling, cutting using hand tools, and pesticide application under proper supervision)
  • Assist in restoration and habitat enhancement including seed collection and processing
  • Assisting with conservation planning including the preparation of Property Management Plans (PMP) for nature reserves
  • Assisting in preparing land securement documentation
  • Assisting with conservation related public events including volunteer workdays, high school field trips, guided hikes, and other similar events
  • Assisting in the preparation of educational materials such as trail guides, pamphlets, signs, and webpages
  • Other tasks as assigned

Experience, Abilities & Skills:

Must have:

  • A love of nature and the outdoors and a passion for the environment
  • Previous experience and enthusiasm for working outdoors, off trail, in all weather and conditions (e.g. rain, heat, mosquitoes)
  • At least a basic understanding of ecology and conservation biology
  • Ability to identify at least some of the following: plants (including invasive plants), birds, reptiles, and amphibians present in Southwestern Ontario
  • Excellent planning, organization, attention to detail, and time management skills
  • Good communication and teamwork skills to develop and maintain good working relationships with staff and volunteers
  • Imagination, forethought, and sense of humour dealing with unexpected situations and complex stewardship requirements
  • Valid Ontario driver’s license and clean driving record

Assets

  • Previous experience working with environmental conservation projects
  • Ontario Exterminator License
  • First Aid training

Eligibility:

Participants must:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period;
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations;
