Hiring: Educator/ Reptile Keeper
Organization: Scales Nature Park

Location: Scales Nature Park, Oro-Medonte, Ontario, position may involve travel throughout Ontario.
Accom.: Shared accommodations may be available on-site within the main building or in nearby staff housing at a subsidized rate.

  • Duration: 4-6 months with extension possible depending on funding, position to be filled immediately
  • Eligibility Requirement: Must be eligible for federal Youth Employment Strategy- up to 31 years of age
  • Salary: $20/ hour, 35 hrs/week

Scales Nature Park works to conserve wild reptiles and amphibians through a variety of initiatives. These projects include the START (Saving Turtles At Risk Today) Project and the CARES Project (Conservation, Action, Research, and Education on Snakes) in Georgian Bay. scalesnaturepark.ca

Educator/ Reptile Keeper — Duties will include (but are not limited to):

  • Learn the subject material related to educational programs regarding reptiles, amphibians, and nature in general (inclusive of snakes, turtles, amphibians, and wetland programs)
  • Perform outreach, on-site and online educational programs about reptiles and amphibians, and other topics, to a variety of audiences at venues throughout Ontario
  • Assist with husbandry for a large collection of ~400 reptiles and amphibians including cleaning, feeding, enrichment and maintaining associated records
  • Learn husbandry protocols, requirements and environmental conditions for many species
  • Maintain biosecurity standards in accordance with Nature Centre protocols and procedures
  • Learn and practice safe and appropriate handling methods. Monitor members of the public handling animals during public interactions
  • Supervise volunteers who are assisting with educational programs and/or animal care tasks
  • Assist Coordinators with communications to schedule and coordinate events
  • Assist with facility development, habitat restoration and field research projects as time allows and as appropriate to the interests of the candidate
  • Assist in creating interpretive signage, promotional posters, and other educational or marketing materials for programs and events.

Requirements:

  • Strong oral communication skills (positions require speaking to the public, answering questions, and supervising animal handling)
  • Experience presenting in front of large crowds of all ages
  • Ability to work and thrive as part of a close-knit team in a live/work setting
  • Positive attitude and willingness to help people face their fears is essential
  • Valid G or G2 driver’s license and good driving record required
  • Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in a variety of settings
  • Flexibility regarding scheduling is important, including evenings and weekends
  • Comfortable working in varying conditions including heat, tight spaces, and humidity
  • Comfortable working with reptiles and amphibians, and caring for insect colonies
  • Able to lift up to 23 kg (50 lbs)
  • Valid First Aid certification an asset
