Position: Nature Education and Communications Assistant
Type: age 30 & under / summer
Organization: Mayne Island Conservancy
Location: Position is on-site on Mayne Island, BC. We may be able to help successful candidate find rental housing.

In collaboration with the Gulf Island Centre for Ecological Learning (GICEL), we are hiring a team member for the summer of 2026 to support educational programming and communications.

This is a 10-12 week position starting June 1, 2026 to August 21, 2026* (with some flexibility around the start and end dates). Average of 35 hours per week with a starting wage of up to $23.50/hr (commensurate with experience) with a possibility to increase the wage part way through the summer, based on favourable performance.

Duties may include:

  • Work collaboratively to deliver nature-based programing for youth ages 6-12,
  • Adapt or develop and deliver nature-based events and programming for adults,
  • Assist in the coordination and training of youth leaders (ages 14-18),
  • Communicate with parents of youth participating in nature-based education programs,
  • Deliver educational content at public events (e.g., farmer’s markets)
  • Capture and edit photos and videos to create educational and promotional materials,
  • Contribute to communications through writing pieces for newsletters or social media,
  • Conduct interviews with community members to highlight contributions to conservation,
  • Support community-based ecological restoration and monitoring efforts,
  • Contribute to native plant propagation and rearing (watering, weeding, seed collecting)

* This position will be subject to availability of funding.

Desired qualifications (you need not have experience in all of the elements listed below):

  • prior experience developing programs for nature-based education and outreach with youth and/or adults,
  • skills in science communication, including writing and leveraging social media to support conservation and environmental awareness,
  • experience capturing and editing video footage and/or conducting interviews to support communication goals,
  • prior experience managing, mentoring or supervising youth between the ages of 13-16.
  • prior experience as a summer camp counselor, or youth instructor.
  • a relevant degree, or progress toward a degree related to the environment, education and/or communication.
