Position Description

The Associate Specialist, Mining Research & Knowledge Mobilization will support WWF-Canada’s work with industry, government, Indigenous communities, and civil society to reduce the impacts of mining on wildlife and habitat.

Key Responsibilities

• Support research and knowledge gathering activities related to the ecological and social impacts of mineral exploration, the regulatory regime in Ontario, and industry-wide best practices for impact mitigation and responsible development through desktop research and analysis, and attending events.
• Support the development of materials and resources that mobilize research and knowledge to key audiences through the development of reports, infographics, policy briefs, presentations, and blog posts.
• Support the stewardship of partnerships with allied organizations, government departments, and First Nation communities and groups by coordinating and attending meetings, taking notes and reporting back on key developments.
• Support cross-team collaboration at WWF-Canada by coordinating and participating in both internal and external meetings and events concerning topics of importance for northern Ontario programming, identifying key opportunities across teams.
• Assist the Wildlife & Industry team, as required, with other related duties contributing to the mandate and successful operation of the department and organization.

What We Are Looking For

• 1+ years of related experience in the natural resources sector, conservation, environmental management, mining or related industry, stakeholder and/or Indigenous engagement, and/or experience with on-the-ground community work.
• Post secondary education in a related area (e.g. mining, geology, natural resources or environmental management, environmental studies, geography, resource conservation, ecology), OR an additional relevant work experience.
• Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Experience in desktop research and analysis.
• Excellent ability to work in a collaborative, team-oriented manner.
• Excellent time and task management skills.
• Familiarity with First Nations Principles of OCAP, BC First Nations Data Governance Initiative, or other similar data sovereignty guidelines an asset.
• Passion for the environment and a commitment to the mission and objectives of WWF-Canada.

Other Information

• This is a one-year internship placement based out of Thunder Bay, Ontario.
• This role may require occasional local travel to attend various meetings and/or events.

  • Candidate must be a new entrant into the workforce, are transitioning to a new career, or the unemployed or underemployed who are entering a new field.
  • Candidate must have not previously participated in an NOHFC funded internship in the 2020 Mandate.
  • Candidate must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Candidate must be legally eligible to work in Canada.
  • Once hired, the candidate must reside in the Northern Ontario community in which they are employed (Thunder Bay).
