Join the Urban Planning and Economy Department to play a vital role in advancing the City of Edmonton’s climate goals. This position is dedicated to building critical relationships, securing funding, and driving advocacy efforts essential for climate resilience and energy transition

Reporting to the Director of Environment and Climate Resilience, Community Activation, the Senior Advisor will develop and execute three key deliverables:

  • Climate Alternative Funding Strategy,
  • Climate Relationship and Partnership Strategy, and
  • Climate Advocacy Strategy.

This is a strategic role requiring a deep understanding of climate action and the ability to convene and broker collaborations with diverse groups to achieve City priorities.

What will you do?

  • Develop and execute a leading-practice relationship and partnership strategy to advance the City's climate goals in an integrated and innovative way
  • Develop and execute an alternative climate funding strategy, identifying and cultivating diverse short-term and long-term funding sources for corporate use, including preparing funding applications
  • Assess the City’s current climate advocacy needs and develop and execute an advocacy strategy with clear actions and resources to drive City climate goals
  • Foster authentic and mutually beneficial relationships and partnerships with key community partners, industry associations, Indigenous governments, and other interested parties to support the City’s climate initiatives
  • Provide expert advice and guidance to management on strategy execution and impactful relationships needed to achieve City priorities
  • Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Political Science, Public Relations, Communications, Business Management, Finance, Environmental Sciences, or a related discipline
  • Seven years of progressively responsible experience in a combination of business and or funds development, relationship and partnership building, and collaboration

Assets:

  • A Master's of Business Administration or other master's degree in a related field
  • Experience or expertise in energy transition, climate resilience, and climate change science and action
  • Experience activating connections specifically for climate action funding and advocacy
  • Certifications or experience in: Change management, Facilitation, Project management, Mediation, Coaching, Negotiations, Partnership Brokering, Reputation management, or Media relations
  • Experience in a consulting environment and grant writing

Skills required for success:

  • Identifies, establishes, and nurtures strong, foundational relationships and partnerships with diverse internal and external interested parties
  • Demonstrates strong business development acumen to identify, develop, and capitalize on strategic opportunities for partnerships and alternative funding
  • Demonstrates excellent research and analysis to identify trends and evaluate potential partners and funding opportunities
  • Brings diverse groups together, brokers collaborations, and facilitates productive discussions to advance common goals
  • Leads, Develops and executes comprehensive relationship, funding, and advocacy strategies aligned with the City's climate priorities
  • Demonstrates experience in cultivating diverse funding sources, developing compelling proposals, and navigating complex funding landscapes
  • Assesses the advocacy landscape, develops clear messages, and executes strategies to achieve desired policy changes
  • Communicates complex information clearly and persuasively, both verbally and in writing, to various audiences.
  • Uses a high degree of political acumen to strategically position issues for decision-makers
  • Applies excellent problem-solving and creative thinking skills to navigate complex challenges and develop innovative solutions

Conditions of Employment:

  • Candidates are required to hold a valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) or higher Candidates will be required to arrange their own transportation and, where appropriate, will be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require the candidate to obtain business-use auto insurance

Work Environment:

  • Note: This position ​may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement ​with ​the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement, and the incumbent will be notified in advance
  • This role works primarily in an indoor setting
  • Availability to attend events during the evenings and weekends may be required from time to time
  • This is a public-facing role and requires engagement and interaction with diverse people from various backgrounds with different needs, expectations and emotional states

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week

Salary Range: $51.181 - $65.310 (Hourly); $106,865.930 - $136,367.280 (Annually)
