Murray’s Farm is looking for a GARDEN MANAGER for our 2024 season!

Location: Cambridge, Waterloo Region, Ontario

Murray’s Farm is a small but mighty mixed farm located in Cambridge, ON, with a passion for pasture-raised heritage animals and sustainable, organic fruit and vegetable gardening. We sell direct to consumers via numerous farmers’ markets in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton area and at our award-winning craft butcher shop in downtown Hamilton. We also sell wholesale to gourmet food stores and other high-end butcher shops.

As we expand our operations, we are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced grower to join our team and care for, tend, and manage our old-fashioned 5-acre garden and 200-tree orchard so we can continue to proudly serve our customers only the best quality garden-fresh fruits and vegetables and homestyle preserves.

This is an exciting opportunity for a grower with a season or two of vegetable production experience under their belt looking to develop their field and harvest management skills.

Job Overview:

As the Garden Manager you will be responsible for working with the farm owner to manage all aspects of our garden and assist with the management of the apple orchard. This can include but is not limited to: planting, cultivating, watering, managing pests, harvesting, and distributing produce.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement a crop plan to provide a variety of fresh produce for sale at our weekly markets as well as for production of our line of preserved goods
  • Lead the planting and cultivation of the garden
  • Coordinate and implement the harvest schedule for three weekly markets
  • Monitor crops regularly for signs of pests or diseases and implement pest control
  • Use sustainable and environmentally friendly farming practices

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 1 year of market garden experience
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently
  • Experience with tractor and cultivating implements
  • Ability to manage and prioritize tasks in a dynamic environment
  • Experience supervising staff or volunteers is an asset

This is a full-time, seasonal, physically demanding position that requires the ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work on your feet for extended periods.

Compensation based on experience.

Full-time, Monday to Friday, occasionally some weekend work.

Position will start in April and end in October.
