About The Howl Experience

The Howl Experience is an education charity dedicated to empowering youth through immersive, land-based learning. By centering reconciliACTION through a Two-Eyed Seeing approach and collaborative leadership, we create transformative programs that connect young people to themselves, their communities, and the natural world.

Indigenous leadership is foundational to our work—not an add-on. We are committed to building meaningful youth pathways grounded in culture, land, and long-term impact.

The Role

The Manager, Indigenous Youth Pathways – Rockies Region is a regional leadership role responsible for managing and delivering Indigenous-focused programming in the Rockies while contributing to the growth of high school education programs across the organization.

This is a hybrid role that combines:

  • Program management and coordination
  • Direct facilitation of land-based learning
  • Youth mentorship and employability pathway development
  • Community partnership integration
  • Indigenous leadership contribution within the organization

You will independently manage regional programs while working collaboratively with our High School Programs Lead and Howl Leadership Team.

This role balances time on the land with significant administrative responsibilities, including planning, communication, coordination, and reporting.

You will not be expected to represent all Indigenous perspectives. We recognize the diversity of Indigenous Knowledges and lived experiences and value what you uniquely bring.

Key Responsibilities:

Program Leadership & Delivery

  • Manage and deliver land-based learning programs for school-aged youth (primarily Grades 9–12), young adults, and community members in the Rockies region
  • Work closely with the High School Programs Lead to facilitate curriculum-connected field trips and immersive education experiences
  • Support the growth of high school programming, including day programs and multi-day experiences for visiting school groups
  • Design and lead Indigenous-focused programs aligned with regional partnerships
  • Mentor Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth through culturally grounded learning experiences
  • Integrate youth employability and leadership development into program design

This role is hands-on. A strong candidate will have meaningful experience working directly with school-aged youth and feel energized facilitating learning outdoors.

Administration & Planning

  • Lead program planning, scheduling, and communication
  • Develop and manage regional program budgets
  • Coordinate logistics and assess risk to ensure safe, high-quality delivery
  • Complete required documentation and reporting

Staff Coordination & Leadership

  • Coordinate and support staff and contractors involved in program delivery
  • Mentor educators in land-based learning approaches and Indigenous perspectives
  • Ensure appropriate staffing coverage for overnight programs
  • Develop contingency plans to support safe and uninterrupted program delivery

Collaboration & Community Engagement

  • Build and maintain relationships with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community partners
  • Contribute Indigenous perspectives to high school programs and educator professional development
  • Participate in regular team meetings
  • Contribute to organizational learning and innovation

Work Environment & Time Commitment

  • Participation in overnight and multi-day programs is required
  • Overnight attendance will generally not exceed 25 nights per year
  • Program schedules are planned well in advance to support work-life balance
  • Weekly driving to Kananaskis is expected during summer months

Who You Are

  • An Indigenous educator, Knowledge Keeper, or cultural leader
  • Experienced working with school-aged youth, particularly high school students
  • Confident facilitating outdoor learning
  • Comfortable managing logistics alongside program delivery
  • Organized, communicative, and dependable
  • Interested in shaping youth pathways outside of a formal classroom setting
  • Collaborative and community-oriented

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Must reside within driving distance of the Bow Valley / Kananaskis region
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Vulnerable Sector Check (valid within 6 months prior to start)
  • Standard (Intermediate) First Aid (Wilderness First Aid an asset, or willingness to obtain)
  • Mental Health First Aid (or equivalent experience, or willingness to obtain)

Preferred:

  • Bachelor of Education or related field (other relevant experience considered)
  • 3+ years of experience working with youth
  • Outdoor Council of Canada, Interpretive Guides Association, or ACMG certification (or willingness to obtain)

Why Join Howl
